beginner Japanese vocabulary

These words and phrases are often used when first meeting someone.

はじめまして。

hajimemashite
Nice to meet you.
Listen to the audio and try to mimic the pronunciation

どうぞよろしくおねがいします。

douzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu
Nice to meet you
[Note: often said after hajimemashite and literally means something like "look kindly on me (for the future)"]

日本語が少し話せます。

nihongo ga sukoshi hanasemasu.
I can speak a little Japanese.

英語が分かりますか？

eigo ga wakarimasu ka?
Do you understand English?

私はアメリカから来ました。

watashi wa amerika kara kimashita.
I am from America.

私は＿＿です。

watashi wa ___ desu.
I am ___.

私の名前は＿＿です。

watashi no namae wa __ desu.
My name is ___.

私は＿＿と申します。

watashi wa __ to moushimasu.
My name is ___. (polite)

お名前は？

onamae wa?
What is your name?

こちらは___さんです。

kochira wa ____ san desu.
This is Mr. (or Ms.) ____.

Why is it "はなせます", not "はなします"?

Please teach me a lot.

はなせます is the potential form, and means 'able to speak'.

If you said 日本語を少しはなします you'd be saying "I'll speak a little Japanese" and people would wait for your to give your little speech in Japanese. (Ok, more likely they'd recognize it as a mistake since that would be an odd thing to say, but still.)

i asked this before but here it seems more obvious,"nihongo ga sukoshi hanasemasu" the "ga" sounds like "na" again, is it "na" or a nasal "ga". thank you

I think it's a nasalized "ga". I don't really have a sharp ear but i hear it as 'nga' like in 'siNGer' in my country we have the syllable 'nga' but i'm not sure in english.. :) i hope it helped (though i think you already got your answer by now) :)

I have recently been hired to a DFS store in my area and of course, I needed to brush up on my basic conversational Japanese for the job. This site, I found on a Google search, is a great and simplistic approach to learning some basic everyday conversational phrases when dealing with Japanese customers. This is so helpful! But I was wondering...is there any way to slow down the audio for beginners? I get a little tounge tied on some of them because they go so fast.
