Hokkaido is the most northern and coldest region of Japan. It is both a ken (prefecture) and a region. It is the second largest island in Japan. Very different from the 'Tokyo' Japan, Hokkaido boasts of a pristine, clean environment hardly touched by man.

Originally called 蝦夷 Ezo, it was changed to 北海道 Hokkaidou in 1869.
