むかし、むかし、あるところにおじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。

おじいさんとおばあさんには、子供がいなかったので、神様に「子供をください。」とお祈りしました。すると、とても小さな男の子が生まれました。小指くらいの背丈しかありませんでしたから、一寸法師と名づけられました。小さいけれど、おじいさんとおばあさんが大事に育てたので、とても元気な若者に成長しました。

ある日、一寸法師はおじいさんとおばあさんに言いました。

「私は、都に行ってえらくなりたいのです。どうか、都へ行かせてください。」
