おじいさんとおばあさんは、おわんとはしと針を一寸法師に渡しました。「これで都へ行きなさい。」

一寸法師は、はりの刀を腰にさし、おわんの船にのって、はしをかいにして川をのぼっていきました。

都に着くと、一寸法師は大臣の家にいきました。

「私を家来にしてください。」

大臣は、一寸法師がたいそう小さいので、びっくりしましたが、とても元気がいいので、家来にすることにしました。

ある日、大臣の娘のお姫様がお寺にお参りに行くことになりました。

「お参りの帰り道に鬼にあったら、どうしましょう。」
