むかし、むかしあるところにおじいさんとおばあさんがいました。おじいさんは、とてもこころの優しい人でしたが、おばあさんはたいそういじわるな人でした。

おじいさんは、１羽の雀を大切に飼っていました。毎日、毎日まるで自分の子供のように世話をしていました。

ある日、おじいさんが出かけている間、おばあさんは洗濯をしていました。洗濯に使おうと用意していたのりを、おじいさんの雀が、すっかり全部なめてしまったので、おばあさんはたいへん怒りました。おばあさんは、雀を捕まえて「この舌がそんな悪いことをしたんだね。切ってしまおう。」といって、むりやり舌を切ってしまいました。
