Re: The Best Way to Learn Kanji

I agree with learning kanji in context and learning them along with words. However, recently a friend of mine linked me to a page called KanjiDamage. It's pretty interesting, it's like Heiseg but better I would say. It's not perfect of course because he fits some things in there to fit his paradigm ...

Re: これは英語 で何という意味 ですか

Personally, I would probably say 「x」って英語でどうやって言えばいいのですか?

x here is whatever word/phrase. You can probably use は here instead of って if you wanted. I'm sure there are various ways of saying it and people will probably give you more examples. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents.

Re: Compilation of Japanese programs for computer/phone

JWPce - basically a dictionary with various ways of looking up kanji. There is no hiragana to kanji conversion when you look up a word in the dictionary ( at least as far as I know, there might be an option to turn it on). ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JWPce ) JWPce is a word-processor, and has a ...

Compilation of Japanese programs for computer/phone

I felt like making a post on programs that relate to Japanese learning and the like. I spent some time into finding them, so hopefully my time spent will help others. Computer: JWPce - basically a dictionary with various ways of looking up kanji. There is no hiragana to kanji conversion when you loo...

Re: imabi web site

I just wanted to comment on a couple things on your site IMABI. In my personal opinion, I think it would do well to specially mark the important things out of each lesson because, from my standpoint and many others (most likely), it's hard to find the really relative stuff when you're thrown a wealt...

I just realized this just now, you'll have to change the encoding to actually view the page. My other computers browser is in JP, so it's automatically set on JP encoding. Sorry for the trouble.

Re: A collection of questions I had from Genki L8

I thought I would try to help out with the くる and いく problem. I have a book that goes into a little bit of explanation. Here's the excerpt from the book: When the verb くる 'come' is used, the speaker's viewpoint i somewhere close to the arrival point. When くる is used as an auxiliary verb, the viewpoi...

Re: Why/How did this "に" get translated into "and"?

So how/why does it break off at "yasashiku"? I never really questioned that in sentences until now. I somewhat agree with micah here seems like it could be a mistake in the printing the most logical thing after looking at the translation you provided is that it should be something like 穏やかでやさしくて、in...

"Freely" translated

Hello everyone! Figured I'd make a post on this because it has really been bugging me. I know that when some people translate a language to and fro that person, often or not, adds their own little spin on the language, hence "freely" translated. For some odd reason this really bugs me, because then ...

Re: Japanese-language gaming for learners

Can you recommend some? I wouldn't even really know where to begin without blindly shooting in the dark so to speak. "google japanese visual novel game" or something... :P Hyperworm mentioned that some visual novels are 18+, but it depends on the game really and the kind of story you want. To me vi...

Re: Japanese-language gaming for learners

I'm not really into "visual novel" types of games myself (even just for language learning), but I imagine the classic Japanese dating sim probably qualifies? I guess that (or 18+ games) is what play_on_my_words was referring to, especially when considering the comment "the only person you really ha...
