はじめまして!^^
I hope you find what you are looking for here.
Also, if I may make a suggestion, http://www.realkana.com is a great place to learn hiragana/katakana.
These are the basics of the Japanese writing system.

Re: Summer goals?

I should have mentioned that I have already taken Spanish 1 and have already learned around 20 Characters. =p I think I may just try to get into my French 1 book, and focus on Japanese as much as I possibly can. You see, I have so much free time over the summer I could go insane and I just need some...

Re: Greetings from Scotland.

Your child is so lucky, I wish I had the Benefit of Japanese speaking parents. In my case I wish anyone with in 100 miles spoke Japanese. Which reminds me, about of an international school. Temple University Japan is where I plan to attend, maybe you should look it over. I do not know if they need a...

Re: hello

Hello! I'm sure you will start making more progress if you try. Set goals everyday and work towards them. Tips for hiragana: transcribe romanji song lyrics into hiragana, use flash cards, and drop romaji!

Re: 私のじこしょうかい

Thank you for replying. I know I used 私 a lot, I do not mean to it just finds a way into the sentence. :? Also, I was not sure about katakana being written in katakana.

私のじこしょうかい

Below is what I am sure is a very poor attempt to introduce myself. Most of this is written in hiragana. こんにちはみなさん! 私のなまえはTylerです. これは私のじこしょうかいです. 私は16くさいです. 私はアメリカにすんでいま. 私はひらがなとかたかながよめる. 私はおきにいりいろ が あお です.私 はにほんごがだいすきべんきょする. 私 は オレンジジュース がだい すき です.私 はにほんのおんがく だいすき です. 【英語】 Hello everyone! My name ...

Re: Hello, looking to learn Japanese.

Welcome! If you want to learn hiragana/katakana quickly this website (www.realkana.com) can do wonders. Although it is a simple flash card website, along with daily practice you should have hiragana down in a week. Learn a few characters a day. Best of luck!

Translation/interpretation career?

Is anyone here a professional translation/interpretation? I am trying to get an idea of what I should be planning for in my last years of high school and because I live in a rural area I have no guidance.

What steps (if any) have you taken up to this point?
Any tips for an aspiring translator?

Again, just some practice. This is a dialog between a store clerk and a customer. てにん:いらっしゃいませ? (Clerk: My I help you?) きゃく: ええ, おはいよ! みずをください. (customer: Yes you may, good morning. Could I get some water please?) てにん:おくらものですか? (Clerk:Is this a gift?) I know, who buys water as a gift? I just needed ...
