Re: Taking a short language course in Japan?

KCP will arrange your housing if you want them too, and they have a pretty close-by dorm that's all of 30 min walk from the school :) I went there for 6 months recently, and it was amazing. It's really not too bad to live there if you pay a bit of attention to your spending, and you can live cheaper...

Re: Look what just came in.

Oooh shiney new edition of Genki! Do you know how different it is from the old edition? I probably won't buy it since I have both of the previous edition books, but I'm kinda curious if/how they revamped it. I have fond memories of the Genki books, heh.

Re: how to read particles de and mo instead of reading as "d

As it was pointed out, it's heavily context based (which lemme tell you, can make things tough sometimes lol). For the record though, the でも that means "but" typically comes at the beginning of a sentence, sort of like how the English "however/but" can. That may help a bit.

Re: Should I go or should I stay?

If you're going to Tokyo you'll be fine. I just got back from my study abroad trip a couple weeks ago, and Tokyo is totally fine. Don't let the mass media misinformation scare you away. The radiation is well within safe levels (and hell, I was exposed to more radiation on the international flight ba...

Re: Summer Study

Well, I'd start the process now since a lot of places have deadlines that are a bit out from the program start dates and require payment before you go. I would ask your university what programs they offer, because you'll want to do that so you can apply your financial aid. There is a program provide...

Re: Anyone want to be study buddies for Minna No Nihongo?

I'd be up for that. I could use the refreshing since the university I'm going to study abroad at will be using Minna no Nihongo. Having a study buddy might motivate me enough to regularly review :sweatdrop: I'll PM you with my MSN email, or something else if you'd prefer :)

Re: learning/teaching

べんきょうする = the general "to study"
ならう = "to learn"
まなぶ = is something like "to study (a bit more in-depth)" or "to learn/take lessons in"
おしえる = is "to teach/instruct"

That's pretty much the gist of it :)

Re: Is genki for beginners?

I think the "writing" issue you'll find with pretty much any textbook. Most of them do introduce writing prompts, but it's assumed that there's a teacher along with the book to grade and help you with them :( I'd suggest what the previous poster did along with one extra thing: Write a reply or somet...

Re: Hello, all.

Out of curiosity, why did you drop the い in 殺意(さつい)? It's a noun as it was. You're right about it being the intent of murder though :3 I think your user name translates closer to "Crows of Murder" or "Murder's Crows." I'd imagine that the unit counter for crows (whatever the heck it is; I can never ...

Re: している or してる

The way I understand it, ~してる is basically the contraction for ~している in the same way that "do not" and "don't" or "I will" and "I'll" are related. It's more casual/slang-ish contraction. Use of ~している is a bit more difficult to explain. You use it when the emotion/action/state of being is still conti...

Re: light - what word?

けい - I found translations of light as in "the issue was a light one" or trifling/unimportant 光 - ひかり - seems to be light, like a ray of light でんき - light as in the electrical lights on your ceiling. 電気 is the kanji, which is basically "electrical energy" or: the lights/electricity :) 灯り - あかり - a la...
