"No koto" with non-human object?

ちょっとすみませんけど。。。Hi! A friend has just moved to an island, and I want to ask how his life is there (ie, how he's settling in). I don't want to use [Island]はどうですか because I'm not asking about the island's well-being; can I use [island]のことはどうですか ? Or is のこと reserved for human subjects? I'm looking for th...

Re: Name that kana!

Thank you! I've written 437 flavors of と but have never seen that before. From which kanji does it derive?

Re: Name that kana!

It might help if you could post a scan of it. A picture's worth a thousand words, so they say. I agree!—but I couldn't get an image post to work. There's an image here: http://kinokageya.blogspot.com/ Most recent (since I haven't actually posted anything in months). I appreciate your effort. Many, ...

Name that kana!

こんばんは! I'm transcribing some old passenger lists—this one's from 1937—and I've encountered a hiragana character I can't identify. I've studied Japanese calligraphy for a few years and have written most hira-, kata-, and hentaigana, so I figure maybe it's older typography. Can anyone help me identify...

Re: 先生にメールを読んで直して下さいませんか。

Hi, NileCat—Many thanks! That does indeed help very much. I'm never sure with the 敬語 because our relationship is ambiguous (in a good way). I look forward to reading your reply again and adding the options to my study list. :-)

どうもありがとうございました!
Best,

先生にメールを読んで直して下さいませんか。

こんにちは! I'm writing an e-mail to my Japanese teacher, whom I haven't seen since December, and I wonder if some of you would read it (below) and point out the errors. (Sensei is very kind, but I don't like to ask him to correct things outside of our lessons!) Context: I consider him both a highly acco...

Re: 「行った方がいい」かな?

Agree—seems like ことの, though probably grammatically OK, isn't necessary and would sound funny. I think generally the verb itself + ほう works best. (Found this page because I was wondering about something like 頑張って何か学んだほうがいいだろうね, about a friend's wondering whether to attempt a specific thing. I'm alwa...

ーいる + -たい?

皆様 ひばり美空さんの「川の流れのように」の歌詞を訳しみながら、私は変なことを見ました: 「任せ ていたい 」。 見たことがぜんぜんないと思うので、動詞の意味は何でしょうかなぁ。 I'm a pretty early student, but I don't think I've seen progressive -いる plus -たい. Does it refer to a situation that ひばりさん wants to be in? 「川の流れのように、緩やかに、この身を任せていたい」—is it the difference between a discrete acti...

Re: 弱い vs か弱い?

kurisuto wrote:According to Goo, か is a prefix mostly used with -i adjectives, that adds emphasis. Apparently it's never written in kanji. So, apart from the added emphasis, か弱い means the same thing as 弱い.
なるほど。 Goo is a little intimidating for me, even with Rikaichan. This is a big help. Thank you. :-)

弱い vs か弱い?

How is kayowai different from yowai? Both seem to mean weak/fragile. I haven't been able to find an example with a kanji for "ka" that would add nuance. Is yowai more physical (弱い vs 強い)?

「人はか弱い、か弱いものですね。」

Thanks!
