For some reason, my strongest memory of Hiroshima is this giant escalator going up to a huge manga museum xD

Re: "Attempt at encouraging"? Or something like that...

鼓舞 means encouragement (the two kanji are literally drumming and dancing) which is not really the same as sanguinity (by which I assume you mean optimism or cheerfulness?). Hmmm...maybe 楽観 ? I couldn't find a direct translation for sanguinity, so I was trying to find something similar. I was thinki...

Re: Look what I found!

Another one like that that I've heard is "Moe-key" for mochi. A few years ago a neighbor asked if I wanted some "moe-key". I had no idea what they were talking about until I saw it.

"Attempt at encouraging"? Or something like that...

I'm writing a paper for my Japanese class, and a part of one of the sentences in English is: "But this attempt at sanguinity is not what the people in the devastated areas need". What I have so far is: でも(this attempt at sanguinity) は荒らされた所にいる人に必要じゃない。 I just can't figure out how to say that English...

Re: How to read 小火

I looked it up on Denshi Jisho (an awesome online Japanese dictionary) and it seems like the only difference is that ”ぼや” is a more commonly used reading than ”しょうか”. I haven't seen those readings for the kanji anywhere else, though. I'm not a native speaker, so maybe someone else can explain it in ...

Books on Japanese Culture

I'm doing a big project for school about Japan, and my topic has to do with the cultures of 「仕方がない」、「がまん」、etc., specifically on the origins of them. If anyone knows of any books or resources about this, could you please help me out? Thank you!

Re: English pet peeves

Yeah, one of my pet peeves is when people pronounce SQL as a word (sequel) Okay, I have never heard anybody say "ess-que-ell". I've always known it as "sequel". At first I thought I had read it wrong. Huh. I'm learning about English as well as Japanese! :hammer:  :xtongue:

Re: あなた、あんた

I recently discovered that あなた is for someone that is..."special" to you. So should I not regularly use あなた for "you"? My teacher said to just use their names, but that sounds kinda weird... I also found out that お前 is rude (lit. "the one in front of me"). So would I never use that to someon...

Re: Confusion About 「で」

I don't know OP, but from the posts, one can tell s/he is really confused with even the basic usages. I can't think of any good pointers to help her/him, except that I wish to focus on the PARTICLE DE, so as not to confuse him/her further. Even though I've been learning Japanese for eight years, I ...

Re: basic hiragana corrections?

Looks good! One little suggestion (really picky): Hiragana and Katakana chart things like that typically are done right to left instead of left to right, but it's not a big deal. Could we also see you ん though? Good job! :)
