Does this make sense?

Hey everybody, haven't been online in a while (because I've been enjoying Japan!) but have a quick question that I feel like I should know the answer to. Basically I want to say "Even though I'm looking forward to going to Osaka, I've already started to miss my friends in Sapporo.” The background is...

Why are some Japanese learners obsessed?

I think we are all familiar with the learners of Japanese who take it a wee bit overboard and by that I mean the ones who have never been to Japan, don't know anything about the country except for what they see in anime/manga but yet have no doubt in their mind that it is the best country on earth a...

Anyone know much about DeNA?

So I'm a college junior who will be studying abroad in Kyoto at Doshisha in the spring and in addition to that there is a pretty good chance that over the summer I would possibly be working as a software engineering intern at DeNA which makes online/cell phone games and does social networking type t...

Re: Struggling through Minna no Nihongo 2!

I don't quite get why you are confused. Can you elaborate a bit more? Why do you think that の is an appropriate particle in this case?

Re: "when" in Japanese-I think the grammar guide here is off

フロリダに行ったときはおみやげを買います If you start a sentence with 行ったとき, the listener is most likely to assume you are talking about something in the past (but perhaps that is irrelevant.) I feel like perhaps a native English speaker learning Japanese might assume you are talking about something in the past tens...

"when" in Japanese-I think the grammar guide here is off

**As a disclaimer I could be vastly mistaken and if I am, then I do apologize and hope someone corrects me! So when using とき to mean "when", sentences follow this pattern: A とき B (When A, then B). But whether A is grammatically past or present is dependent upon whether or not A happened before or af...

Re: frequency words?

It depends on what frequency word it is, but generally you don't need a particle. I remember when I was just first starting to learn Japanese, I was overusing the particle に with my frequency/time words until my teacher told me that you use no particle with those words. Because of the way she somet...

Re: Free Offline Quiz Software

If you go to Tae Kim's Grammar Guide I've noticed that he added in some interactive "tests" after lessons to see if you understood the concept. Also if you download the Anki flash card software you can quiz yourself with a bunch of free example sentences they have available.

"I hope your family is safe"

I think the hardest thing for me right now in my study of Japanese is saying things in a culturally appropriate manner. There are definitely situations where I feel like what I write/say is grammatically correct/fine Japanese but is not necessarily the way a native speaker would say/write the same t...

Re: Marriage in Japan-seemingly biased article

Becki-San and NileCat-San, thank you for confirming my suspicions that this author really has some sort of personal issue with Japan and blew these problems out of proportion in the article. It's actually a bit disconcerting because I'm sure many non-Japanese have happened upon this website and may ...

Marriage in Japan-seemingly biased article

So in my online reading I came across this article: http://www.wa-pedia.com/culture/sex_in_japan.shtml which deals with marriage and sexuality in Japan. The article contains some shocking proclamations that I'm in no position here to verify (considering I've only been to Japan once...4 years ago...f...

Re: I feel like this site is near death

Phreadom, I think you have a lot of great ideas! I had no idea you were so involved in maintaining this site. In my opinion (which probably doesn't mean much) I think one potentially big issue with the site is the lack of intermediate and advanced material readily available to users. From what I can...

Re: Kanji Expressiveness

But you proved that they are not redundant with your point. 3 right? The different kanji help the reader understand which shade of meaning the author is describing. I thought of that too, but a part of me was persuaded by the argument YudanTaiteki-san made in the above-linked thread that a native s...

I feel like this site is near death

I have a bit of a confession. A little while back I introduced myself as a new member on the forum, but truthfully I was quite an active member long ago under another account name and during the interim before I created this account, I had sort of strayed away from this site (feel free to guess my o...
