Re: Japanese rock.

I like the Number Girl suggestions. Very dark and hard. If you like them, also check out their (brainchild's) more recent project, Zazen Boys.

For something more punk-inspired, I would suggest the Garlic Boys. Don't know if they're still around, but they have a few really good albums.

Re: Gokaku Dekiru

Never held it in my hands, so can't say for sure, but looking at the book on Amazon (Amazon Japan has the option to preview the book), it looks like it's just a collection of practice questions. The Kanzen Master (完全マスター) series is an old stand-by. It's pretty thorough, but is all in Japanese. I als...

Re: So, told some 1 I was taking JLPT 5. Got a weird respon

I've long since abandoned the notion of writing the N5 exam since writing this; it's in no way worth money to me now. I hear you there. I never took the JLPT for that reason alone. There are a lot of jobs that list JLPT level whatever as a requirement, but in reality I've found that if you can work...

Re: So, told some 1 I was taking JLPT 5. Got a weird respon

Again, I'll support the other posters in saying that the JLPT measures language ability differently from the standard progression of Japanese taught in schools here. Re: Marriage in Japan-seemingly biased article

Some of the content in this article might be applicable to the couples in their 60's or older - but even then, only some . My wife (japanese) and I have many friends who are very happily married. And none of them had a pre-arranged marriage. In fact, to illustrate, my wife's grandparents were an arr...

Re: Should I Homestay with a family or go Dormitory?

When I was getting ready to do a study abroad, the head of the Japanese Program at my university suggested that I avoid all contact with foreigners during my stay in Japan. I took his advice, lived with a Japanese family for the year, and only hung out with Japanese friends. I can say that my Japane...
