Re: A question about writing 'き' (ki)...

Yes, it's like the difference between fonts and personal stylistic choices but for that very reason, you should learn to recognize each one so you are not stumped when you read something in a different font, or written by various people. Also, it's very common in calligraphy to join the strokes like...

Re: "when" in Japanese-I think the grammar guide here is off

フロリダに行くときはおみやげを買います。 When I go to Florida, I will buy souvenirs. This sounds totally normal to me and matches the translation. But as a Japanese, I could also possibly interpret that yes, they will buy the souvenirs before they go to Florida because omiyage is not just souvenirs but gifts and whenev...

Re: Direction -- ほう and ほうこう

As pointed, ほう (方) can also be read as かた and both can have a "that object" or "that person" meaning. I can't think quickly offhand of how it's like "direction" but some examples so you can a better sense of the difference... Talking about various things, single out one thing and add ほう トヨタの方が好き。 I ...

Re: Double negative sentence

ここはおかねをはらわなくてはいけませんか I can't go on without paying here? = I must pay here? I would remove "go on" from the translation. This is not "to go" iku (行く) but where something is allowed or not. Japanese are big into manners, rules and stuff so they are sensitive to what is allowed and what is not allowed....

My instinct was to only add one letter to your sentence.

それは何だかしりません。

Re: I cat believe a phrase is stumping me...

I like hyperworm's reply. This isn't a phrase I'm familiar with either and I don't read up on political things in Japanese so I'm unlikely to read criminal/peace context things but I wanted to google the phrase ないでもすむように for other contexts to get a sense of what it can mean. You probably did the sam...

Re: "I hope your family is safe"

Late reply but another possibility could be simply that she was on a mission to collect donations and wasn't really in conversation mode. She was being polite to have one but she really just wanted to get back to donations. I'm not saying it was a socially awkward conversation, but you know there ar...

Re: Help translating "Poor Impulse Control"

Just out of curiosity, I wanted to see what alc.co.jp had since they tend to pull out various phrases so it makes for good examples at times. They had a related phrase, impulse control disorder 衝動調節障害 so yeah, I'd agree that trimming it to 3 characters ain't gonna happen. They also had these phrases...

Re: New user Translation Question

If you definitely are referring to a male and their cohorts, then use 彼ら but if you're not sure, go with the default -tachi. You can string that to just about anything. It could be a group of any kind of people.

彼達
私達
あん達
けんじ達
etc

Re: ら、り、る、れ、ろ -- Pronouncing the R's.

Have you found good variety of audio files to listen to so that you can get a better sense of the pronunciation? Or do you know any Japanese speakers, even if they work at a restaurant, that could listen and help? I never thought about where you place the tongue but I just tried to say the girl name...

Re: Gender differences in spoken Japanese

It's been awhile since anyone posted on this thread but I came across during an internet search and while I agree with many of the replies, I wanted to chime in. I haven't lived in Japan for many years so I can't accurately comment on the current speech trends of youth but I still listen to some mus...
