Re: Japan disaster photos by Max Hodges

I think the pictures of the kokeshi dolls under the wooden planks are very surreal. The fact that kokeshi were originally used to 'remember' a lost child, this picture has the most immediate impact to me.. Very heartbreaking. The picture at the Ishinomaki Shelter with the people excercising is also ...

around 6'-1" and a 54-58" chest? clothes shopping must have been fun for you while you were in Japan Sorry, I missed these posts. Let's just say, I'm lucky I don't have extremely long legs. But yes, in general, finding anything to fit was difficult at best. I jokingly asked one lady, selling Hanten...

Re: Uses for かしら

Nilecat,

isn't kashira similar to the usage of deshou vs darou? By that, I mean to soften the question a bit and not make it sound so harsh or abrupt?

Good analogy. home is to uchi as house is to ie. besides, IE no yatsu just doesn't sound right..

..... I also found out that お前 is rude (lit. "the one in front of me"). So would I never use that to someone I'm not close friends with? In what situation would it be appropriate to use お前? On one trip to Japan I watched the movie Face Off on TV in English with Japanese sub-titles. There is one sce...

Re: あなた、あんた

Omae is definately a senpai/kohai situational word. the senpai would call his kohai omae while the kohai would use other forms of keigo to his senpai. For example, you might find a father speaking to his son and using Omae, especially if he were correcting or chastising his son for doing something i...

Re: 神様 - one god or two?

As mentioned by Dustin. it's a tricky path.

But, in most cases, plural kami will be easy to determine within the context of the sentence.

cold weather and Hanten.

I remember, oh so long ago, in 1987-1989 while living in the tohoku area, that with no central heating, all we really had to keep warm was the futon, a hanten, an oil or gas stove or if you were lucky, you had a kotatsu. Being a bit broader in the shoulders and a bit taller than your average Japanes...

while i was jovial about it, i was pointing out that navel is the incorrect way to spell naval. navel has to do with belly buttons and oranges. naval has to do with navy. anyways, carry on.

No I don't and I'm not particularly interested in getting one either. I quite like my plain old phone because it does what I want it to do. I only use it to make calls and for texting. The next person is in a dilemma! They don't know who to barrack for in the Asian Cup Soccer because Australia and ...

Re: 2 weeks $5000?

Well $357/day for food, entertainment and a bit of sight seeing should be adequate. On my last trip I had a JR Rail Pass and had prepaid my accommodation and two of us got by on less than $100/day. I'm too old to go clubbing though. :) ..... my sister is living in japan on the yokusuka navel instal...
