Re: subbed or dubbed

I never watch dubbed anime, Jdorama and film.
The voice actors sound really emotionless. Sometimes, they even change the script to adapt the story a bit into the local culture.

But yeah, if your intention is to learn Japanese from TV, watch them subbed in Japanese or remove the subs altogether :)

Re: Buy manga online

Also, if you know the ISBN of the volumes that you want, you can probably ask your local bookstore to order it for you. This is what I do when I want to save on shipping costs :)

Re: Is there a way to talk to Mangakas?

I write fanmail to my favourites, not just mangakas (Japanese or otherwise) -- birthday cards, whatever. I have not received any from the Japanese though. But who knows, you just might get lucky, right? :) PS: When I was younger, I used to write to a lot of my favorite NBA players. I got a poster fr...

Re: Saddest Anime Ever?

Hands down, Grave of the Fireflies. As if the anime was not sad enough...I watched the live action one with Matsushima Nanako.
It got to me on the same level as Schindler's List or Passion of the Christ -- movies I've only watched once. Never again. :D

Re: Seal stamps (Hanko/Inkan) questions about rules

Are foreigners required to get a hanko? is a signature not sufficient? When I was working for a Japanese company, the Tokyo office sent me my own hanko with my surname in Katakana. We use it to record our names on documents we have finished processing because the documents are passed between Manila ...

Re: seemingly safe places to live in japan

In my last trip to Japan, I left my camera in the basket of my bike. I only realized it after about half an hour of strolling around. I rushed back to where I chained my bike and surprise! My camera is still there. :) I guess I didn't have to worry about possessions because the Japanese are generall...

Re: Should I Homestay with a family or go Dormitory?

Hi KyleSmith, which sites do you use to find homestay families? I'm interested in doing a homestay for my next trip for a different experience. Do you use Couchsurfing? Thanks!

At what temp is this 2 seconds? They would probably heat it a bit high, right?

Re: I need a way to stay fluent

Penpals as in snail mail or email? I used to have lots of Japanese snail mail friends through the friendship book network. They write to me in English, I correct their sentences when I write back and then they will correct my Japanese in the next letter. A bit difficult writing by hand in Japanese e...

Re: Looking for a 電子辞書... suggestions?

I am also on the lookout for suggestions. My Canon Wordtank looks like it's on the brink of death. My batteries never last for more than 5 hours now. I just bought these rechargeable batteries because I found that the non-rechargeable ones go dead quicker now. I am not sure if that is a common probl...

Re: Anyway to memorize Japanese?

Have you tried using mnemonics for Hiragana and Katakana? Some people are tactile learners, meaning, they can memorize the kana (even Kanji) by writing over and over. Some people are visual learners. They can memorize something if they can associate it with a picture. When I was starting out with hi...

Re: Musical Instruments.

I am studying how to play the violin. I managed to play Twinkle Twinkle by following a Youtube video of Alison Sparrow (her Youtube channel is theonlinepianotutor). But I am still struggling with playing all the notes and I cannot, for the life of me, tune my own violin properly.

Interesting video, thanks for posting! I liked your video on Kansai-ben. It's something that I have never really mastered. It's too fast for me and all those chau really trip me up. :?
