Re: Typhoon Melor

Was the typhoon more intense in the south of Japan? I've tried contacting my friends in Kyuushuu but they aren't answering. I've sent and email too (to a Keitai denwa) and so far, no reply. It's been a couple of days now, and I'm starting to worry. The typhoon pretty much passed Kyushu by. We live ...

Re: Artistic Kanji - incomprehensible for me :<

My guess: The guy maybe coined the "seeming kanji" for some artistic reason. (It might read "マテウ・・・" in KATAKANA) Who knows? I think this might be the answer. The top looks like it could be マ with テウ in the middle, and ッス the bottom blob. Everything seems pulled extremely to the left. (Are you a De...

Re: Salaryman Senryu

Sounds like someone is speaking from personal experience, Oyaji. ;) I can definitely relate to this 川柳. And welcome back to the forums! It's been a while! Thank you. Actually I do stop by and lurk every so often, but generally before I can add anything to a thread someone beats me to it, and says i...

Re: Salaryman Senryu

Now the fun part begins explaining(In Japanese) why its funny or clever from a Japanese perspective, Sigh, long nights ahead for me Perhaps the speaker has had one too many conversations like this: 何を食べる?

I can't help but think that the middle part is a henkan miss and should be 「何と言ったらいいか」. Using 行う there seems odd to me.

Re: みあささ - I keep hearing this, and its really bugging me

This is typical of music from Okinawa, and though neither of your examples is traditional Okinawan, they both have an Okinawan influence, particularly the first song from about the 2:15 point.

Of course Orange Range is from Okinawa.

Looking around, I found this site about SAPAs. This little note at the bottom is particularly of interest: 「高速道路の「上り」「下り」の別は、一般的に東京に向かう方向が「上り」、その反対方向が「下り」です。 As it says, and as has been mentioned already, there are exceptions, but in my exp...

Re: Makoto's First 親父ギャグ

That's a great story, but if he starts running around the house with a necktie tied around his head, making loud sucking noises trying to get food unstuck from between his teeth, you should probably start worrying.

By the way Clay, where did you say you are, and how much longer will you be there?

Welcome back! Long time no see! Thank you. I just got back from "The States", where I spent much of the summer, and before that its been a very busy year. I started a new job last year, and I've been heavily involved in some community activities. There are some stories in there if I ever find the t...

Would something like "Northbound" "Southbound"; "Eastbound" "Westbound" work?

Clay, if you and your family have any plans to come down to Kyushu, drop me a line. And if you don't have any such plans, I think you ought to make them. :D

I was worried you were saying bad things about me.

When I think of ちょい悪オヤジ the first thing that comes to mind is "mid-life crises." But I don't think that's what you are looking for.

I can't think of any English word that really expresses the true meaning, but how about "man-about-town" ?

Re: Word Game

Here are the answers: Riddle 1. 金と金をたす → 金+金 → 針金(はりがね) I'll let Becki answer her riddle, but my guess (based on Garappachi's hint) is OJ. (On a completely unrelated note: We drove over to Fukuoka yesterday to pick up our son from his university, and on the way back picked up...

Re: Name Questions

It should be alright to call the parents At first I would call the children by their names, adding さん, or くん for boys younger than yourself. After initial introductions they will probably tell you their nicknames that their friends use.
