I have seen the first episode of Hitsugi no Chaika and I can confirm that Dustin is right.

It means the exact same thing as positive/affirmative as in English, and it's used similarly as well. In the military and so on...

Re: Some questions about the verbにneg.pot form verb construc

I’m pretty sure your actual skills are far beyond N1, however, the test seems to require you to possess trivial knowledge that native speakers take for granted. Go for it! I’m glad if I can be of any help. :) That may very well be true based from what I've seen on mock exams and heard on actual lis...

Re: Some questions about the verbにneg.pot form verb construc

Thanks for the explanation, I'll remember it. I've decided to take JLPT N1 in December, for real this time. So I'll probably be pretty active here from now on :)

Re: New to the site - and ready to learn!

Hello Dave and welcome to TJP. This site is great for beginners to start learning Japanese and get a solid foundation. It's a bit lacking in advanced topics but you'll find that there are nice experienced people and Japanese native speakers who will help you out if you have advanced questions too he...

Some questions about the verbにneg.pot form verb construction

Since I started learning Japanese I've picked up some spoken Japanese that I've never read about as a grammar point anywhere. It's the elusive verbにnegative potential form verb-construction. Examples I can come up with are 寝るに寝られない and 食べるに食べられない. From my understanding 寝るに寝られない means "even if I want...

Thanks I'll remember it. Japanese is really difficult when it comes to subtle nuances of words.

Translating the word selfless into Japanese.

A few days ago I stumbled upon a problem. I wanted to say the word "selfless" in Japanese and I set out to find a good translation using various dictionaries. I found a couple of words/expressions that seem to have the meaning selfless, but I don't know how commonly used they are or if they have any...

Re: 永遠の初心者 vs 永遠初心者

We were discussing this in the chat, and LordOfTheFlies was saying that it sounds much better with the の in there, but it seems to me that it makes more sense with 永遠 acting as an adjective? It is acting as an adjective with the の, that's the reason it's there. Particles can sometimes be om...

Re: Confused about the usage of に

It is as you say an indirect object marker and it connects 鍵を置いてきたこと with 気がついた. There really isn't much explanation that can be done about it. You could try reading these pages if you want to know more about に: http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/verbparticles http://japanese.about.com/lib...
