Re: Difference between とはいえ and といえども

Thanks for the post. I see where you pulled that definition from, and ironically the best explanation came from the one dictionary I seldom use. :P I'll have to remember to start using it more. With that in mind, I think I've found something that helps differentiate the two in my head. I'm sure no o...

Difference between とはいえ and といえども

Hello there everyone. Making another attempt at N1 this summer (missed it by two points last time :x ), and I've been brushing up on my grammar. However, I can't for the life of me discern the difference between 「とはいえ」 and 「といえども」. Looking Japanese dictionaries and a few of my grammar books, they bo...

Re: 怠る...怠ける...あれ?

I've looked at dictionary.goo.ne.jp and have spent at least 2 hours digging through places such as http://okwave.jp/qa/ where Japanese people ask and answer each other questions. I even tried asking one of my house mates (Japanese guy) and he just said remember those words together, as well as sever...

Re: 実演付き

Looking at the sentence, you could say that it is "attached." I'm not the best at explaining these things, but bear with me. 実演付きでピアニストによる曲の解説を聴く ピアニストによる曲の解説 - commentary of the song by a pianist 聴く - to listen 実演 + 付き - an "attached," or included performance / playing of the song So, it's listenin...

怠る...怠ける...あれ?

Evening everyone. I've hit a roadblock in my studies and I'm hoping someone can help straighten this out for me. I'm been toiling away with my books prepping for JLPT in december, and this question has left me stumped. 安全管理を (a. 怠る ・ b. 怠ける) と、重大な事故につながる。 While their meanings are essentially the sam...

Troubling particle in this sentence

Been so long since I've been here, hello everyone. I feel like I've come pretty far in my studies, but there's always that one stumbling block that comes along eventually. I was reading something recently, and a particle in one of the sentences struck me as a little odd: "今回は、 この街 を 住んで 、この街が好きになった、...

As I suspected. Thanks so much for the detailed response. I think it'll sink in a lot easier now.

~からには、~以上は どういう違いますか

皆さん、こんばんは I've been steadily trying to work through my grammar books studying to hopefully pass JLPT 2 this year, and coming across these two I feel really stumped. I have two different grammar books and their meanings appear nearly Identical, and although I spoke with my teacher trying to distingui...

Re: A usage of くせに

By any chance do you know of any text or reference that elaborates on this usage of くせに or is it something that has to simply be picked up? The meaning may be obvious but every example in reading or hearing くせに I've come across has always been in a fairly straightforward insulting manner so I was re...

A usage of くせに

Hey guys, another day, another Japanese riddle. This is a comment I heard / read the other day, and although I have a fuzzy understanding of it after inquiring I'm still not 100% about it. "ラジカセのくせになんかカッコイイ… 少しガンダムっぽい" Now from what I know, くせに is used to show a feeling criticism or dissatisfaction,...

Re: Conjugating Honorifics? (尊敬語)

Oh my :D I didn't realize 食べられます would become such a hot topic. In regards to that though, as interesting as this conversation is, I don't think her example was necessarily focusing on the verb 食べる so much as her saying that all verbs can be change into the potential form which is actually not true ...

Re: Conjugating Honorifics? (尊敬語)

Thank you Nilecat. Putting her example of 食べられます aside (I'd personally choose 召し上がります), when she said potential form something inside me just screamed "noo! " when thinking of all the wonderful godan (or う-verbs as some books call them) that I've seen written using the same form as passive w...

Conjugating Honorifics? (尊敬語)

Just got home from class and the teacher was going over 敬語 briefly and how to conjugate verbs. I'd gone over these already some time ago with books on my own so I wasn't too worried about anything she put on the board, but towards the end she mentioned something that totally confused me. When she wa...

Re: ~ようだ similar to hearsay? (conjecture)

After all this time, I think I finally have a good grasp of it. I as well as my teacher was pretty shocked to find that dictionary of grammar I've used all this time wasn't completely truthful about this bit of information as well. Thanks so much Nilecat. :D

Re: ~ようだ similar to hearsay? (conjecture)

You've helped me a great deal Nilecat. It seems whenever I come to these boards once in a blue moon I end up giving someone a hard time seeking explanations but it's greatly appreciated. However, I need just a little more clarification. To begin with, what did make you assume ようです and みたいです are the ...
