Re: Bible Japanese Webpage

Actually the language isn't archaic; recent translations of the Bible are done into modern language. The worst thing you can say against it is that the translations tend to be very literal -- they stick to Western language word order as much as possible and insert subjects and objects even when they...

Re: Particle の specific usage question

の can be substituted for the subject-marker が (but not the conjunction が) and does so in fixed antiquated expressions, and in modern usage in order to prevent multiple が from causing confusion or to tighten the relationship between the noun and the verb. It's not this fixed; の can substitute for が ...

Re: Need help translating instructions to a textbook.

That book is intended for the native Japanese instructors using the textbook in their classes, so it's not necessarily something that you need to bother with.

Re: が woes... =(

I understand why there's no "の" particle there, because the "my" is implied by 好きな. However, 私が好きな所 is neither IMPLYING "my" or INCLUDING "my". Instead it reads to me as "I am my favourite place". Does anyone understand why I would read it as "I am my favourite place", or am I just bonkers? Your pr...

Yes, it should be 其(そ), which is archaic for それ.

It is. The first で is the particle and the second the -te form of だ....it works out somehow. :)

Re: Can you buy nattou in amerika?

I was only ever able to find it in one Japanese grocery store; the general "asian" (i.e. Chinese) grocery stores didn't have it. Which is not surprising since it's not really eaten outside of Japan.

(Now I'm back in Japan and can enjoy natto every day again for 30 yen or so a cup. :D )

You said that we were rude but then made a post that pretty much said the same stuff the supposedly "rude" people were saying.

I'm curious to know how BrianM's studies are progressing.

I suppose I would count myself as neutral now although the book is not good on its own; the information at forum.koohii.com will help you make use of it if you choose to go that route (which you certainly don't have to).

furrykef beat me to the punch but I'll add some comments at the two places he was unsure about. 2) ふたりとも しあわせそう The two of them are lucky (blessed?, happy?) SCREENSHOT "Happy". I'm not sure I've seen しあわせ used to mean "lucky". 3) たいへんです ワルワル だいおうに (No idea here, though King Waruwaru (ワルワル だいおう) is t...

Re: て+いる confusion

You can also just use a plain imperfective -- 家に帰る, which works in some cases. But in my discussions with native speakers about this, it just doesn't seem like there's any way to literally translate "I am going home [= I am on my way home]" in a way that is completely satisfactory to a native speaker.
