Buying Japanese books for reading

Does anyone know the best way of buying Japanese books? So far I've tried the following: (1) Buying at an actual store. (I'm lucky enough to have a branch of Asahiya within driving distance, and a secondhand shop in the same area where they sell mainly best sellers.) This is great for browsing, and ...

RE: Best Flashcard program for Vocab

FWIW, I think I've used all the flashcards programs there are and none of them do what I would like. Right now, for vocabulary I use wakan, and it is an awesome program. BUT... I wish the examples were better integrated. (For instance, the example sentence, with the example word itself replaced by a...

RE: Haven't posted in a bit

2)This part I will have t...

RE: History/Literature

Sorry I had to be away most of a week. Looks like the beginner (or maybe "early intermediate" sounds better?) group has a text? Yatta!!!!

How about those of us who can read adult-level Japanese? Are people still interested? Should we vote on a text?

RE: Haven't posted in a bit

RE: History/Literature

Hi, all. Don't want to seem bossy, but in an effort to help get this show on the road, I've gone back through the thread and made two lists of who's shown interest and texts have been suggested so far. I hope this will help us make some decisions about a text to start with! Here's the list of partic...

RE: Is this possible? Useful?

Hi hamsterfreak! That's what I've been doing... but it requires pasting bit by bit and/or substantially revising the copied text by hand after I've bagged it. (Usually both.) The problems are: 1) the normally displayed page has lots of stuff I *don't* want to copy (navigation links, what else is goi...

Is this possible? Useful?

There have been several threads I wished I could copy out in their entirety -- particularly ones with a lot of Japanese messages in them. Is there, or could there be, a function to produce a "printer friendly" (or copying friendly) version of a thread with the author and timestamp of each message ma...

RE: Haven't posted in a bit

Hey, cool! I'll give this a try! 1)夫の運転する緑色のBMWが、崖から転落して大破した。 It was the green BMW my husband drives that fell off a cliff and got wrecked. (Implying that there is some question raised about which car had the accident?) Actually it might be more natural English to say "my husband drove," since the c...

I don't know how to fix the zipped text, but if you copy and paste the XHTML version into JWPce, it writes the furigana in parentheses (rather than above the moji as displayed on the screen) automatically.

RE: History/Literature

I like Harisenbon's recommendations of short (~50-page) "novels" (novellettes?). The first "book" I finished was the independent, final story in the book _Kitchen_ -- this was called Moonlight Shadow (in katakana English) and had different characters than the rest of the book. It was about 50 pages ...

Yay, zengargoyle, you're my hero. The aozora site is wonderful, and I found the Akutagawa Ryuunosuke story I was looking for! (白)! Also from the site you mention at first, there is a link to the Japanese Text Initiative, which is the page I was looking for. Modern texts are at http://etext.lib.virgi...

RE: History/Literature

The only problem with novels is the logistics of everyone getting hold of them. We don't all live in Japan. <g> That said, I really want to see your list and if we can all agree on something, I'll get myself out to my local (sort of) Japanese bookstore and buy it. I have been wanting to have a readi...

RE: History/Literature

Still looking for the "old Japanese Literature" page... One thing I do know is available online is an archive of the entire original Densha Otoko Thread (at http://www.geocities.co.jp/Milkyway-Aquarius/7075/trainman1.html). It's a fun read. Other online-readable things: The newspapers print personal...

I can see the headlines now: American Cannibal Apprehended by Gifu Police after high-speed chase. (When apprehended he laughed fiendishly and shouted, "Great! Once I'm in jail I won't have to do anything but LEARN KANJI!!!!!!!!")
