RE: JLPT 2006 - one week to go!

やった!! A year ago 2級 seemed so very far away, but I actually made it! I finally have something in print to validate my 2 years in Japan... I want to thank Clay for making this site, and to everyone on the forum for all of your information and advice!!! You guys are pretty sweet. :D (and I'm thankful ...

RE: Mnemonic devices?

My attempt, don't know how useful, but doesn't use English! My idea is to write a sentence in Japanese using hiragana from each of the 10 groups (あかさたなはまやらわ). Repetition within a groups is ok, but groups must be in order. Here's my attempt: あーー・かーさーたーなー・はまやらわ うああ!かきずしってなに?ハムやりん(ごがいい!) what I'm hopin...

You should get it sooner than those abroad.
My booklet says the middle of February, and if I don't receive it by Feb 19, I can officially start harassing them. Can I expect it earlier, or are you saying that people abroad have to wait even longer?

RE: JLPT 2006 - one week to go!

I took the 2kyuu in Kyoto. We are towards the end of the beautiful fall foliage season, and I have been holed up in my room for the past two weeks finishing my kanji studying and practicing the reading section. Unfortunately, I don't have enough time to read all of the passages, the questions, and t...

RE: 「どうぞ」と「ください」はどう違いま

The way I usually think of it is どうぞ means "go ahead" and ください means "please". This is basically what Akumu was saying. But ください can also be used when offering something, and in that case, どうぞ and ください can be used together in the same sentence, making it more polite: どうぞお入りください。 (I believe this is c...

Duly noted. I should have looked it up or checked with a native speaker before making that statement. And now to use that "edit" button.

RE: Tattoo Advice

Well, I'm not really an expert on this. Tattoos aren't too popular around here, except among yakuza, which is why there are many hotsprings here that don't allow people with tattoos. Most of the tattoos I've seen here are just patterns or designs. I guess for Japanese people, kanji don't look cool, ...

RE: Tattoo Advice

When English speakers come to Japan, most are bewildered and amused at all the strange English they see on T-shirts, household products, etc. Some are of course outright bad english I saw a shirt with a rooster on it the other day saying "wake up! wake up! it's time to occur!" I paused for a moment,...

RE: Medical coverage in Japan

I agree that the healthcare system in Japan is excellent, although it is sometimes can be a bit hard for foreigners to get used to. As Mukade mentioned, there certainly are some communication-impaired doctors here, but I think you find that in any country. The great thing about the Japanese system i...
