RE: How Long did it take you to learn Hiragana?

Depends on what level of learning. To be able to look at a character and eventually remember what it sounded like only took me about 30 minutes with a stack of flashcards. To be able to read it at a rate similar to what I read the roman alphabet took me about a month and a half of daily study. It's ...

I'd also recommend picking up one of the Guild Wars titles, either the first one, or Nightfall. Factions has too steep of a learning curve, especially when coming from something like Runescape. You have to purchase them in a store, they're the same price as any game, but there is absolutely no fee t...

RE: how can I say" of the" on Japanese!???

Both 私は and 私が would be acceptable in this situation. There are differences between the two, and I suggest you look them up (and memorize them, so you don't have to go back to the first page of your textbook or whatever every 10 minutes like I do.) However, neither of them really mean 'I am', and th...

RE: "I know double what you all know combined" part two

i studied japanes over 5 yrs now but i can't read kanji. Here's hoping this person doesn't feel the need to procreate. I've been studying Japanese for 6 months, and have been able to read basic Kanji since the day I started. Just want to add, I'm fully aware that there is a 99% chance that this per...

Pokemon.

First one that actually got me interested in it was Death Note. So I'm really recent.

Shadow of the Colossus. Sure it was short, but the sheer scale of it was amazing. What ISN'T great about slaying a giant flying worm hundreds of feet above the ground?

はじめました、Erikさん。 TJPへようこそ。 Hehe, challenge yourself and see if you can read that. Though I figure it's pretty obvious. Anyways, this site is an excellent resource for learning the Japanese language. I haven't touched the lessons here ever, but the people on the forum are all very helpful and will clea...

こんにちは、Mags。 TJPへようこそ。 Let me be the first to say good luck on your goal of learning Japanese. You're right in starting with the hiragana alphabet. The sooner you can get rid of romaji (writing Japanese with the roman alphabet), the better for you. Romaji is used almost nowhere in Japan, so it really...

You asked quite a bit of questions here. I'll take them one at a time, I guess. Kakashi-kun wrote: Im new to this, so what should I learn first? I mean, I know I should learn hiragana, then katakana, then kanji, but where does vocab and grammar fit in here? Wherever you want it to. If you intend to ...

RE: Selecting a text book on a budget

Thanks a bunch everyone! After doing a pile more research, I went out yesterday and placed an order for Japanese for Everyone. I got a completely amazing deal. $44CAD (almost exactly $40USD) for the book and the audio. Other stores had both together listed as $130, so I'm quite happy. Now just a 3 -...

Hey Tspoonami, what does that kanji actually mean? I've never seen anything so complex. The dictionaries I tried didn't even have it.

こんにちは, TJPへようこそ。 (While I'm here, would TJP take に or へ? Does a website count as a physical place? I'm assuming it does.) Anyways, I'm also somewhat new to Japanese, studying in a class for the past 5 months or so. Seems like a lot, but I know very little. Still, my MSN is in my profile if you'd lik...

RE: Selecting a text book on a budget

Change of plans. Turns out Chapters carries Japanese for Everyone as well as Colloquial Japanese. It also carries the Audio Tapes, but they're $100 so I'm not going to bother. I have both of them readily available to me for an exceptionally cheap price. They can both be obtained quickly and easily. ...
