RE: Calling a keitai from outside Japan

Thanks guys, I've just got off the phone, everything went well.

It was the first time I've had a phone conversation in Japanese, so I was kinda nervous, but it was fine. :)

RE: Subtitles that don't match

And on the other hand, there's some idioms that translate perfectly... The grass is greener on the other side. ~ 隣の芝は青い。 ... or am I misunderstanding the meaning of 'idiom'? :P Edit: Oh, and on a related note to those four character sayings... I love how long-winded 風林火山 becomes in English! :D And w...

RE: Looking for someone to speak with :]

Have you got a textbook? Sorry, that's not really in answer to what you asked. :P Practice with other people is definitely valuable, but not if you don't actually know anything to practice with! I doubt anyone's going to volunteer themselves to be your unpaid teacher, but if you get a textbook and s...

RE: Calling a keitai from outside Japan

Thanks Kagemaru, I'll try that! I shouldn't think the country I'm calling from would affect anything but the exit code. :)

RE: Calling a keitai from outside Japan

My phone carrier? What, my land line provider in England? Hmm, maybe... but they're probably not expecting to field questions about other service providers in other countries, so I thought I'd have more luck asking on here. I suppose I could call 'The Operator', ominous as it sounds. I might try tom...

Calling a keitai from outside Japan

I'm supposed to ring someone tomorrow, but she only gave me her number to call from inside the country. I've found that to dial out of England I use 00, and into Japan is 81, but I think I heard something about different network providers having different codes if you're calling from abroad, I'm not...

RE: Subtitles that don't match

Erm, I didn't mean to say they were bad translations... I just thought it was funny how much they had to add to make a workable English equivalent. Shirasagi, I think I've seen that film, but if it's the one I'm thinking of, it was years ago, before I even started studying Japanese. Is that the one ...

Subtitles that don't match

I was just playing Tekken 5, and at one of the cutscenes (I think it was the one before Jin fights Jinpachi) Jinpachi shouts, 行くぞぉ〜!! and the subtitle reads, "Prepare to be assimilated!" and I found it pretty hilarious 'cos they'd just completely ignored what he was actually saying and made up their...

RE: 気

Hey, thanks guys. katafei, I put 気 into that dict and it didn't actually return anything at all... maybe it's not working today or something. :| Shirasagi... wow, what a reply! Thankyou very much! I'm not sure I really understood how to use 気が利く or 気を利かす very well, but I'll remember them in case I h...

I was thinking about this word recently because it seems to be really versatile, so I thought it'd be a good one to try and fully understand. So, here's some of the uses that I know (or think I know)... 気をつける This is probably the first instance of the word that I learned, where it basically means to...

Snoopy Town

It's between Harajuku Station and Takeshita Street.

原宿駅とタケシタ通りの間にあるよ。
Is this right? I thought it was, but my friend said she, uh... well, she said 「全っ然わからない」... but then, she's pretty bad with directions, so maybe it wasn't my Japanese at fault. :P

RE: Desu.

I'm male and I only voice that 'u' when I'm being sarcastic, as in 'Sore wa zennen desuuu...' or when I'm (jokingly/pretending to be) annoyed, like 'Iranai deSU!'

Not great examples, but do you get the idea? :P Not saying that's a 'correct' way to use it or anything, just my two cents.

RE: A couple of random questions...

I went to a game center with a friend yesterday, she picked something up in one of those UFO catchers, then dropped it before it got to the exit hole... what do you think she said? :P むかつく!ちょうむかつく! Funny how sometimes no sooner do you learn a word than you hear it used in context... it's happened to...

RE: A couple of random questions...

Ah, okay, thanks. I thought I heard somewhere that you're not actually expected to be all that polite to convenience store workers because they're only doing their job... can't remember the source though, perhaps I'll just discard it. I prefer being polite anyway. :) Yep, that sounds about right! Th...
