Re: "No koto" with non-human object?

Thanks for the post!

Yes, you can use のこと with non-human and even inanimate objects. 机のこと about the desk...

You can ask what someone thinks of the island any number of ways. For example:
[island]島の暮らしは好きですか?
[island]島の生活はどうですか?

Re: Difference between 独り and 一人?

独り and 一人 both mean "one person" but seeing 独 reminds the reader of こどく (isolation; loneliness; solitude).

The Microsoft IME dictionary has a usage note confirming this. Use 一人 when counting people and 独り when someone is sad and alone. :(

Re: Trying to do something big with my life.

Dreams do come true--with persistence, a lot of work, and monk-like patience for just the right timing. I have a friend who hired people for his company. He told me the only thing a college degree did was show the applicant started something BIG and saw it through. Your father is right about it bein...

Re: TJP Books Forum?

Hi Clare! Thank you so much. That would be a great idea for people to report errors (I've gone through Hikoichi editing more times than I'd like to admit!) and suggestions. I'll try to make time to set that up. I'm in the middle of working on the Kanji-a-Day email list right now. That's another free...

Shizukana Kaze, you should be grateful for Shiroisan's post. Learning a language is all about making mistakes--and believe me we ALL make plenty of mistakes. It's best to just laugh and learn from them. :D

Re: JLPT Kanji lists

Jonathon at Tanos told me (if memory serves...) he built the lists based on estimated numbers given by the test makers and what kanji were assigned to the old levels. It should be close, but it isn't official.

As far as I know, they still haven't released an official list.

Re: A little guidance needed.

The biggest difference (beside small corrections and expanded lessons) is the included CD as Elfeera mentioned. If having that extra listening practice is important to you, the 2nd edition will be far cheaper than trying to find the first edition CDs. I'm glad Japanese textbooks are now including CD...

Re: Need Help for translating a tattoo from a pretty girl's

It is sad to see people do stupid things. Why anyone would mar perfectly good skin is beyond me, but such is youth... I've heard tattoo removal is a booming business.

Re: eReader

I'd like to get a Nook (I have a Kindle Touch) to test with, but according to this forum: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showth ... p?t=140725 it looks like Japanese isn't default, but it is possible if you are tech-savvy to add and convert epub Japanese books.

I'm pretty shy so you can count the number of times I've been in the chat on one hand! But it can be a great place to get instant feedback and share with others who are also learning Japanese.

Have you learned hiragana yet? http://thejapanesepage.com/hiragana

Re: Page Activity

Actually, Rich, you may be right. I just looked at the Google Analytics data since I started tracking it (2008) and the site's visitors really hasn't changed. (about 1500-1800 unique visitors per day--although page views are way down (2008 averaged about 14,000 a day; now it is about 5-6k--Ouch!) Ma...
