RE: The one, the only, the "Hey that's a useful site" Thread

http://lang-8.com seems like a great site.

You make journal/blog entires (as you would on a site like livejournal, myspace, what have you), except in the language that you're studying, and there's a built-in way for people to offer corrections when they comment.

RE: Kanji That You Hate/Love

New most-hated kanji: 後.

I'm sure there are some I'll hate more at I get into ones with more and more tiny little strokes. But for now, to hell with thee, vile behind-kanji.

RE: Anyone Likes Elfen Lied?

I liked it quite a bit, mostly for the contrast of cuteness and brutality.

RE: Kanji That You Hate/Love

I have a love/hate relationship with kanji that look just like one of the kana. 二,刀/力,口,手,八,工,etc. Usually easy to remember, but so hard to distinguish from the kana >_<. I like the appearance of 金,中,雨,品,囚,母,and the right side of 話. I dislike the appearance of 西. It just looks like this ugly, evil c...

RE: sitting on the floor

Even getting into the seiza position, much less holding it, hurts my ankles. Even on a soft surface like a bed. Cross-legged, though, is no problem. A sort of half-lotus position (with both legs bent ~90 degrees or more, one on the floor and the other on top) is essentially my default sitting positi...

A week or two, but I still mess up nu/ne/me/re/wa sometimes (and it's been a few months since then).

RE: しか〜ない

To clarify on this: despite the sentence being a positive "want" statement about the place, the "don't want" construction (-takunai) is used?

Him: im going to guess that says "happy birthday BAKA haha you dont understand japanese so i can say whatever I want !" Me: No, that would be something like 貴様は馬鹿でいい誕生日あれ,ハ...

八じはんに起きたくない,でも盾カに銀行『ぎんこう』を行かなければなりません。 I don't want to get up at 8:30, but I need to go to the bank at 10:00. (Is there a way to say that without nakere ba narimasen? That seems too long and cumbersome for people to use it all that often.) 私たちはプロパンガスをないので私が やきうどんを食べた。 Because we didn't have any prop...

RE: Job in Japan w/o College Degree?

Here's a related question. . .what kinds of degrees would be useful in Japan? I'm probably going to go back to get my Master's in. . .something, because a BA in Psych is pretty worthless (in the US at least, and most likely in Japan too). I do want to go through the JET program regardless of my degr...

RE: JET, NOVA, and others

I looked into this, and from what I can gather, the various schools offer from 240,000 yen/month to 300,000 yen per month (JET is the highest at 300,000 per month). JET seems to be the only organization that will pay for your ticket there, however a number of the other ones will pay for all the depo...

もし牛乳は飲まれりませべ,だめにしません。
If the milk is drank, it will not spoil.

I think I bit off more than I can chew with that first verb. . .nomu -> nomareru(passive) -> nomarerimasu(polite) -> nomarerimasebe(potential).

あさごはんで玄米(ちゃいろごはん)を食べます そして 牛乳を飲みます。
For breakfast I eat brown rice and drink milk.

RE: Do the Japanese like black people?

I remember reading about one 温泉 that said they put out a "JAPANESE ONLY" sign specifically because sometime in the past a bunch of 外人 (russians, I think) came in and caused a lot of trouble, so future 外人 drove away the more profitable 日本人customers.

RE: Have been doing?

Ah, I was wondering how one would tell 3 months/march and one hour/1:00 apart. And I should have remembered います。 >_< I didn't think -たいる was a valid conjugation, but I threw it out there as a guess. So に is "at" a specific time and 間 is for a specific duration? Got it. ありがとうございます。 I'm pretty close t...
