University of Hawaii?

I'm hoping/planning to go to the University of Hawaii the year after next to get a BA in Japanese. I've heard vaguely from a few people that the U of H has the best/most thorough Japanese program, but chances are I'll be checking out the program via campus visit just to make sure I'm not wasting my ...

RE: Hello! Need some help with learning hiragana and katakan

I remember practicing hiragana and katakana with vocab words. Copying a character over and over was just too boring. I do the same with kanji when it's possible (ex: write 失礼します instead of copying 失 and 礼 over and over.). Haha, I still think ネズミ when I write ネ (my list had that as a katakana word. D...

RE: The ingenious Heisig Method

This reads like a commercial. Also: One method of learning might not work for everyone. The way I learn Chinese confuses the hell out of anyone who asks - but I managed to learn in the average week - the 20 or so new hanzi that the teacher gave the class. I've used other methods in the past which do...

RE: and now a morbid question..

I think I would like to be hit by a train. It's nearly happened 4 times now*, and seeing as it takes me about a half second for my brain to scream, "TRAIN!" and depending on how reckless the driver was - a second or a two more before the train passes behind the car - I expect it would be a a relativ...

I suppose it's a possibility, but I try not to assume bad things about people I barely know. :/

RE: Question for those learning English

I checked around on some of the boards I frequent and you're right about the Chinese being the only ones to do the '''''',,,,, bit, but I still see some non-Chinese people giving long strings of periods. I'm starting to think that maybe they just haven't learned how to properly transition from one s...

Question for those learning English

Since the all the message boards I go to have mix of different nationalities I often see English speakers who are just beginning to learn the ropes of grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. I know that learning English is very difficult and probably quite tedious so I am not intending to make fun when...

RE: Japanese internet chatspeak?

Thanks.
It's kinda puzzling to me how people will go out of their way to make writing more complicated, though. ;)

RE: Hey.

Books and dictionaries are going to be your best friend from here on out. Buy several. My recommendations: Get separate dictionaries for kanji, slang, and general vocab. Make sure not to buy an old slang dictionary.
By the way, UNI = University of Northern Iowa?

EDIT: Oh, and welcome!

RE: Japanese internet chatspeak?

And I thought it was bad enough trying to read English chatspeak. :| I'm guessing the kanji swapping and ざゃない/じゃない errors are comparable to the liberties taken with English in chatrooms/text messaging? (Ex. "Foto 4 u" in place of "I have a picture to show you.") Or is it done to a lesser extent so f...

RE: AP or JLPT?

AP is the so-called "Advance Placement" exam. Basically, in American high schools (I don't know about other countries for this) you can take AP courses which are taught at a college level. AP tests are taken after you complete the class to show that you have learned all the material presented in the...

RE: English pet peeves

I'm pretty forgiving of English mistakes because I'm native and it still puzzles me at times, but one mistake just drives me up the wall: "The reason is because..." Why do people say that? Why combine two perfectly good sentence starters ("The reason is," and "Because...") to create one absolutely h...

RE: Is Japan running out of room?

Last I heard their population was going down due to lack of births. So yes, a population crisis - but of a different kind. Too many old people. ;)

AP or JLPT?

I've been considering taking JLPT3 this December, but after reading on here that the Japanese AP exam is based somewhere between 3 and 2 I'm not so sure if it would be worth the money (+traveling) needed to take it. My other option is to take the AP test at the end of this upcoming school year and s...
