Re: i have truble learning kanji

In my experience, especially when you first start learning kanji is to learn them in mnemonic strings that contain similar patterns. For example: 寺: In a book I found that this kanji's meaning of buddist temple is a derivative of the kanji's meaning for "standing still". Whether true of false it mat...

Re: 見ることができます V 見られます

Wow... nice question. You had me thinking for quite a while there, since I hadn't considered a similar sentence in the past. Hmm... to be honest I'm not really sure. We're talking about an animal here. I think what you'll use relies heavily on context. If you're talking about a random platypus passi...

Re: Kanji Handwriting Thread

Hey Kudo Masaki. I have a question. Are you left-handed by any chance? I'm asking this, because I get the distinct feeling that you write all horizontal lines from right to left. (the diagonal artifact in the cross part of あ, た and す is a particular tell-tale sign). As for your writing, I think you'...

Re: から vs. ので

My teacher mentioned briefly that から is used to present a reason in a neutral way and ので implies that you take yourself in account along with the reason. For instance, she mentioned that if you were late because you missed the bus and were apologizing, using から would imply that it wasn't your fault ...

Re: JLPT...

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. You can use the diploma issued for any circumstance where you'd need to verify your knowledge of the language, be it a job application, a university application etc. I'm not sure if anyone in Japan would be terribly impressed with it (I doubt most people know JLP...

Re: Using から as "because..."

Yes, you conjucate normally. Unless you want to sound extra-polite, you conjugate the verbs in the "infinitive", since the polite tone is conveyed by the main verb of the sentence and not the verbs in the subordinate clauses. So under normal circumstances you would say きのうえいがを みた から、おそく かえりました 。 (po...

Re: Help appreciated

I don't mind giving this a shot. BTW, did someone give you these questions or did you devise them by yourself? Cos some look weird (e.g. using "anata" with the polite o-, which seems a bit superfluous and unnatural). 1. お名前は何ですか。o-namae wa nan desu ka A. (私の名前は)スティーヴです。(Watashi no namae wa) Steve de...

Re: JLPT 2007! Are you taking it?

*dances around*
I just got my results for the 4級 as well.

文字・語彙。。。100/100
聴解。。。。。。。82/100 (Seems I got worked up over this for nothing)
読解・文法。。。189/200
総合点。。。。。371/400

Thank you all for your help and support (and I hope I do just as well next December in the 3級).

Re: Telling Time- Beginner's Question

Last year, when we started learning about counter nouns, I made this table with different counters so I could see how this "rendaku" happens (i.e. which mora interact with which). I hope this table will help. (It's a screenshot and it's in greek, but I doubt that will be a problem). It's also rather...

Re: On'yomi or Kun'yomi?

By all means continue. I've read quite a bit on the subject, but its always nice to listen to a native' s point of view and the way they were taught the history of their own language at school.

Re: What's that kanji on the index page.....

No wonder I could not find it. Ancient characters, huh. Scary と思います。怖い~よ~ Thanks! What?! Entering that character in every online and not dictionary Chinese AND Japanese produces the same result (in both meaning and pronunciation). Writing the character in IME the way it's written in the logo automa...

Another Issue

Here's another interesting discrepancy, Clay. I was logged on to the site for more than an hour (browsing other sites etc.) and I was automatically logged out of the forum (probably due to inactivity), but NOT the main site, so I had to relog-in the forum alone. The problem was that I wasn't present...
