Re: 見る and 観る?

Thanks for the update, akibeiさん Actually about 子供 I myself -- for what it can count -- prefer that, but time to time I saw 子ども written somewhere. As of 小人. Interestingly I always felt somewhat a sense of mirroring 大人, though for instance the IME on my mac doesn't have that writing on it, and I actu...

Re: Who is this guy!?

Recently, Nishida has become the spokesperson for the Lottery here in Japan. The advertisement you've posted is for that very thing, in fact (advertising for the "summer jumbo").

Maybe you could try a search on 'Japan' 'Lottery' 'Commercial' or something similar.

Re: Alternative medicine (non-Western)

Kanpo is very commonly used, such that it is not really an alternative here, per se, just another type of medice. Most every doctor you visit here will give out western medicine typically, but will also subscribe kanpo to his patients, depending on the situation. Acupuncture, moxibustion and chiropr...

Re: 紅白 Kouhaku 2008

Sorry, but watching Kouhaku reminds me of why I dislike Japanese (and American, for that matter) POP music so much.

Other than the Enka, it was like watching the same song being sung over and over again until the end of the show. <barf smiley> ;Q> </barf smiley>

Interest rates for a loan would be 金利.

I know, because I'm paying out the arse for one!

Re: Organic food

The more commonly used word for 'organic' would be 有機, and it's starting to pop up more and more in shops and restaurants here and there. In fact, I was just at the Kirin beer hall in Nanba this Saturday, and they had a special, limited-time menu item of organic potatoes! (Yeah, at a beer hall. Who'...

Re: Paying in taxes in Japan

I've wondered how Japanese taxes compare to those in the US. For those who have lived in both countries, are they higher, lower, or about the same? Taxes can be a lot higher in Japan, but you have to remember that we have a lot of social welfare programs here in Japan that don't exist in the States...

Re: Paying in taxes in Japan

One nice thing about Japan is that, if you work for a company, taxes will be taken care of for you. You don't have to go through the tedious process of figuring out, filling out and filing your own taxes like you do in the States (unless you're doing 'freelance' work or are self-employed). As far as...

Re: Can you have animals in Japan?

Can you have pets in Japan?

Well, I've seen dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, crabs, parrots, turtles, beetles, crickets, songbirds, chinchillas, owls, snakes, mice, spider monkeys, raccoons and the like for sale at my local pet shop.

So, yeah, I guess my answer to your question is:

Yes.

Re: How do Japanese view foreigners?

You're a better person than me. If it had been me, that would have definitely ended in some kind of confrontation to get that grin off his face. Oh, believe me, I would have loved nothing better than to stomp a new mud-hole in him. The problem is that when your status in a foreign country is alread...
