I would suggest as soon as possible. But, keep in mind, the sooner you start the harder it will be. But the earlier you immerse yourself in the culture and style, the better overall for your learning.

I think gomen nasai etc. are more general apologies. English 'sorry' has double meaning. I'm pretty sure the Japanese one doesn't.

I will argue that manga is, in fact, the best place to learn a large chunk of Japanese. But it should not be the only place. Manga is perfect for boosting your vocabulary, and it also happens to be fun (unlike a textbook). The trick is to read enough of it to understand the context of weird/colloqui...
