RE: Tanoshi mi

In fact, 「楽しみ」(tanoshimi) is the substantive form of the verb 「楽しむ」(tanoshimu) who roughly means "to enjoy". So it would mean "enjoyment", right? As you can notice, it is also closely related to the adjective 「楽しい」 (tanoshii) which is an adjective. Most verbs whose end is in 「〜しむ」 (~shimu) has these...

RE: Studying Abroad in Japan

Hey, demeteloaf! I was like... Thinking about asking the SAME thing at almost the SAME time! My case is a bit alike. I study Japanese at a level that I'm really confident to take 3kyuu this year, but not confident yet to take 2kyuu anyway. 1 year and 6 months of study in depth. Anyway, I'm still not...

Count on me, then. But please, can someone confirm the time for the next meeting of 3kyuu? Or will it be the first at Sep 24? I checked Chatroom Schedule, but I just found about the Translation Group and 4kyuu study circle... :D

RE: Kanji Handwriting Thread

I want to post mine, but I don't have scanner and when I took photos with my digicam it don't work so well. Well, anyway, I'll try to solve my problems and post it. >< I've been thinking that I would really want to have my calligraphy examined by "pros". ;P

RE: Izu no Odoriko question

Thanks! I was thinking this could have a sort of traditional symbology with a greater cultural meaning like those beliefs that a woman should not get over rooftops, fireflies connection with souls, kagero's with frivolous thing, etc. Like those things who everybody reading Japanese Literature seems ...

Izu no Odoriko question

I was reading the Seidensticker's translation for this work presented in "The Izu Dancer and Other Stories" by Tuttle and I'm somehow puzzled about the symbology through a passage of this story: "[...] The little dancer brought up tea from below. As she came to me the teacup clattered in its saucer....

RE: 可肉 does that "long" potential form really exists?

Thanks. That was what I first thought since I always see ~eru being used to form the potential for step five verbs. Kamermans really did an excellent work with his book; many things that I never have learned in class I discovered through his book, but I guess that one part about the "long potential ...

RE: 可肉 does that "long" potential form really exists?

That's what I thought, but when I was reading the book from Nihon-go Resources, it is mentioned that it can also work for verbs outside of ルgroup (五段)verbs. That's why I'm troubled. I'll paste again the passage that annoys me: Michiel Kamermans , An Introduction to Japanese Grammar 泳ぐ: to swim 泳がれる:...

RE: 可肉 does that "long" potential form really exists?

EDIT: Trying to sound more clear: 可伯`: potential form of a verb; i.e.: "to be able to do (verb)" What I'm used to see: 一段: 寝る/寝ます ⇒ 寝られる/寝られます 《to be able to sleep》 五段: 帰る/帰ります ⇒ 帰れる/帰れます 《to be able to come back》 五段《例?》: 飲む/飲みます ⇒ 飲める/飲めます 《to be able to drink》 As you can see, while I understand t...

可肉 does that "long" potential form really exists?

Sorry if this thread already exits, but I really was lazy enough to not search for the past 3 pages. I was re-reading the excellent free book from Michiel Kamermans (from Nihongoresources) and when I carefully read the section about 可伯`, I saw this: Michiel Kamermans, An Introduction to Japanese Gra...

This will be a lenghty entry.

Just to keep it going... This is not a very useful 漢字, but it is one of my favourite colours, then, let's go with it: 紺 - コン (Navy Blue) 紺色 ≪紺色≫- meaning "navy blue" 紫紺 ≪紫紺≫- meaning "purplish blue" And 紺屋 ≪こうや≫ ≪こんや≫ meaning "dyer's shop". It's nice to notice that some of the 漢字 with 糸偏≪糹≫ are rela...
