Re: To call = to read in japanese??

Thing is, though it's not linguistically clear, "to call a cab" means to HAIL a cab, as in, grab one from the street. If you have to call the cab company, you are calling FOR a cab, and that's a different kind of call. In English, we have the same word for both, but in Japanese they have a differen...

Re: Should I go or should I stay?

Sorry, I've been lazy and haven't read the posts except the first one. If you've been to Japan and loved it, enjoyed it, would like to go again, etc...That wouldn't stop you. If you haven't, the degree in which you'd like to go shouldn't stop you either. If you want to see Japan, see it. I don't wan...

Re: What is it like to be a 外人?

Living in a town that sees hundreds of 外人 every single year, you will find people so completely intrigued by you or completely indifferent. That's the beauty of it. We got our heads torn of by an otaku clerk at a manga store for looking at the goods under the aisle (a no-no) but in the bar next stor...

Re: Speaking too much English in Japan

Diligence? EDIT: I had this problem totally, I studied in Japan being around tons of English speaking foreigners and numerous Japanese friends that spoke perfect English. You have to take the insinuative, its not easy. Fortunately my girlfriend in Japan didn't speak much English but outside of that ...

Re: 9.0 Magnitude hits Japan (Miyagi Prefecture)

I unfortunately held my breathe for awhile logging on here, at first I made sure the immediate people I know over in Japan were ok..fortunately most of them are from the Kansai region, so they're ok. Then I sucked it up to get on here...this site has meant a lot to me over there years, I may not hav...

Re: PhD in English Language and Literature at a Tokyo Univer

JLPT Level 2 in 16 months?? Are you sure you're not over estimating your abilities? 16 months seems like a perfectly reasonable amount of time. That seems almost incredibly implausible to pass level 2 and have only been studying for 16 months. I mean I don't mean to question your ability, honestly ...

Re: Question: Could I inflate a japanese bank account before

When I was in Japan they had a seminar for all the students staying for a long period of time for opening up a bank with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking. Maybe it was just overkill because they wanted to emphasize that opening a bank account in Japan may differ substantially from perhaps your home country b...

Re: Help!

Burstandbloom-san, I’m afraid I don’t see your point well. Are you asking if ~ことがある can form a question meaning “have you ever?” ? If so, you are absolutely right. But, well, burstandbloom, I don’t see you are a beginner in terms of Japanese. I assume you are not saying of that simple usage. Beside...

Re: Help!

@Nilecatさん. It isn't wrong to look at ~ことがある。 As sort of asking "have you ever?" in English, right? Because that's how I've sort of always looked at it.

Re: Drinking Culture?

The drinking age is 20 years old. I've noticed, if you're a Gaijin and look the age, you probably will not get carded. Mostly from what I found, there aren't many 'western style' bars in Japan. Not that they don't exist, I just think its more common to find the Japanese style bar, or 居酒屋 (Izakaya) w...

Not too much to contribute here, but someone mentioned Evangelion. Interesting, in the title of the new releases of the movie they use the character 'ヱ'.
ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版. Just thought I'd point that out!

Re: Extending Temporary Visa (90-day Visa)

I thought I had something to contribute to this thread that would be helpful, but then I realized I have a different kind of visa. So it was different in my case. I did leave Japan though for Korea for a few days. It was actually kind of confusing. I had to get some kind of re-entry permit that made...

Re: Japanese words and Phrases learned from Anime/Manga

No one has mentioned, コラ! ..... Means, roughly like '....the heck?' I believe. ...... From EDICT; こら (conj, int) (1) interjection meant to scold or reprove someone; hey!; (2) interjection to call out to someone; hey! Not sure if I put it in the right place, but I believe I did... I commented on two ...
