RE: Time to murder some sentences...

Also, if you are learning with a Japanese friend, then saying all those "imasu" tails sounds a bit ...formal. In fact, you would use "futsuukei" (informal form) most time.
For example:

I understood = Wakatta.
I don't understand (at all) = (Zenzen) Wakaranai.

So.

RE: habitual action

Additionally, maybe it sound a bit odd. But the sample sentence spank-san wrote "I enjoy shopping at the mall." can be SIMPLY translated as:

Shumi ha kaimono (suru koto) da. (Lit: My habit is shopping).

or

Kaimono shitain da. (Lit: I like to go shopping).

Wow, what'd you say ?B)B)B)

RE: habitual action

The "koto ga suki" is correct. But that guy need "such and such...". So he would use in with the "tari suru" structure. V ta + RI + V ta + RI + ... + V ta + RI SURU + KOTO GA SUKI (DA). Rei: Manga wo yondari, ongaku wo kiitari suru koto ga suki nan da yo. -> I like doing things such as reading comic...

RE: what should i learn first?

My ways is to master any grammar structures first and add vocabulary to make sentenses. Mastering the "key" of Japanese language will help you know why some expressions must be in this way and not that way. Thus you can easily remember vocabulary.

If you want to express hatred. You can take the verb stem and add "YAGARU".
