Re: Agonizing over whether to learn Japanese

Often, yeah ; but if we take the example of Belgians, does that mean that they're really dumb ? Of course not, but I just keep wondering where this reputation comes from, what this tiny little bit of piece of truth is. I know it's crazy that people think Belgians are dumb - after all, haven't they ...

Haha depends which part of France. From what I've gathered, those on the Côte d'Azur and in the southern regions are a lot more décontracté in comparison to les Parisiens, or les français du nord!

Re: Agonizing over whether to learn Japanese

well... that's true I guess :P but no I can't learn it this year, because if I don't get good grades, I'm not going to get into uni :( But I will learn it next year!

Re: Agonizing over whether to learn Japanese

ok firstly kef, that last post wasn't directed towards you so sorry for that confusion. to gundaetiapo and infidel - have you ever heard of something called "changing your mind"? When I started this thread, I was a lot less informed than I am now. In fact, I wrote a post about half-way through this ...

Re: Agonizing over whether to learn Japanese

Um can people PLEASE stop putting words in my mouth? I never said gairaigo was an outrage, so just stop lying right now. I said that the volume of gairaigo which has been entering Japan during a short period of time goes beyond the bounds of normal linguistic borrowing. I never said "yuck - let's ge...

Re: Agonizing over whether to learn Japanese

No I'm not french, but I've learnt it for a while. Yes, I suppose all neologisms these days are becoming more and more english (with the possible exception of Iceland). I don't know what it is - kanji just really fascinate me and for some reason I love learning them...

Re: Agonizing over whether to learn Japanese

Once again you've misinterpreted what I mean. I don't purposely go around avoiding romance words in English - why would I? I love French, and it's a romance language!!!!! I was merely using that as an analogy to the gairaigo/kanji issue. It was an ANALOGY, not what I actually do. In fact, I remember...

Re: Agonizing over whether to learn Japanese

I never said I wanted to learn NO gairaigo whatsoever. I just said that I wanted to use kanj in preference to gairaigo. So I don't know why you think I'm not wanting to learn a single word of gairaigo; it's like pretending romance words don't exist and only using anglo-saxon words - impossible. but ...

Re: Agonizing over whether to learn Japanese

I explicitly said that "the Japanese can do what they like to their language, it will just affect whether or not I study it". So please don't put words in my mouth, by saying that I'm telling Japanese people what they should do or not do to their language, because that is simply NOT true. I was just...

Re: Agonizing over whether to learn Japanese

Not really. To communicate in a language, part of what you have to do is communicate using normal idioms and normal language. There's no way to avoid gairaigo and make your Japanese sound natural, or even comprehensible. But it's like in english - often in english there are two words for things, th...

Re: Agonizing over whether to learn Japanese

I've accepted that Gairaigo is OK, because each speaker has the right to choose whether or not they use it. I've sort of just fully realized that now, so please forgive me for my rantings. I want to use 4000+ kanji and minimal gairaigo, and every japanese speaker has the right to choose, because Jap...

Re: English usage?

Well, JaySee, I guess I've sort of accepted gairaigo, after what everyone has told me (some more heated than others :P) about why it's just a natural process. So yeah, I've accepted that gairaigo are there, they aren't gonna go away, and they are a totally natural phenomenon considering Japan's clos...

Re: English usage?

I think that saying things like "gtg brb" shouldn't be used is a bit silly - this is the evolution of language on the internet, and "lol", "nvm" and other things are going to pop up because that's just what's happening lately across the internet. I don't see why communicating using these phrases is ...
