Re: Basic Reading Material and Vocabulary

You mentioned learning from music. Have you seen jpopasia.com? It has music videos and people post the lyrics in romaji, kanji, and the translation in English.

Re: Need Help! Pokemon Heart Gold Arceus Event Japanese Text

I had fun trying to figure this out. I managed to figure out that it was saying something about 'other pokemon', but that was all. (I misread pasocon, or I'd have understand that bit as well, I think.)

Wow, thanks Lucas89! I was -way- off on what I assumed it meant, having never looked it up.

Re: To (probably) discuss a lot of basics

I agree that this could be helpful as well... But perhaps this isn't the forum for it. There are places like Lang8 that are set up to do this already and are perfect for it. You won't get any grief there and you'll get a lot more native response. Not that this isn't a good forum... It's just that th...

Re: のです、んです、and のではない

Warning: I'm still very shaky at JP grammar. The 'no' particle is being used to show that the sentence is an explanation. That -may- be why it's wrong at the top, because the second form isn't explaining any more, it's stating. As for the rest, it's saying something like A: She isn't well. Is it bec...

Re: Frustrated by a long-term plateau

I'm not at your level either, but you yourself said you have a problem with listening comprehension, so that seems an obvious thing to work on. 'More exposure' is an obvious answer, which includes watching TV. But even better would be to get a pen- or phone-pal. When you absolutely have to understan...

Re: Online Japanese 小説/E-novels

Ooooh, this is perfect. :D Except for the lack of pictures, it's exactly what I've been trying to find in a physical book! Thanks Clay. :D Also, for those that don't know, aozora has 'ruby' code embedded in the xhtml versions, so you can install the firefox xhtml ruby support and it'll turn the pron...

Re: What PS3 video game

I hate sports games, so my opinion is probably useless, but I had a -lot- of fun with Gundam Musou 2 in Japanese.

Re: Ultimate Vocabulary Lessons for top 1110 Kanji

I bought the CD for 2001KO and helped make the lists above. I've been studying from them and I definitely saw an immediate improvement in my ability to read. (I'm pretty bad at it to start with, though, so YMMV.)

I didn't use RTK, but I used something similar. If you're going to go that route, drop everything else while you do it. It'll take a few months, but the boost it gives your learning is amazing. (Here's the part where I admit I only got to 1300, though... I'm seriously considering going back and doin...

Re: Starting a J-pop band - Need help!!

I think that other band only is able to make it because they have 2 Japanese members. So if you want to make it in Japanese, you'll need some Japanese members, too.

So go make some friends!

Re: Do I really need Anki to study?

I initially thought Anki was for 'studying' and 'learning' as well, but it's not, really. It's for remembering. Once you've 'learned' a fact, put it in Anki and let it help you remember it forever. But just putting facts into Anki might not be best way to learn those facts. There should be some stud...

Re: Anime for kids

Kero-gunsou is fun, but has a lot of plays on japanese words, and kanji usage, so might not be best for a new learner. A lot of old-school US cartoons have a -ton- of content that is way, way over the heads of any pre-teen. That doesn't stop them from being fun for everyone. I put Keroro Gunsou in ...

Re: Anime for kids

Chi's Sweet Home. It's about a cat that gets lost and is found by a family of humans. VERY simple speech. Might be a little kiddie for a 9 year old, but ... I dunno, I found it sorta entertaining at 32, since I could actually understand a lot of it. Minami-ke. It's about some sisters that live toget...
