Re: よく〜 ものだ

Ah! I see! It did cross my mind that perhaps this sentence is complimenting someone for his/her composure after being troubled, but if that's the case it would be:

人に迷惑をかけられておいて、よく平気な顔をしていられるものだ。

かける would have to be in the passive form wouldn't it?

よく〜 ものだ

This sentence appeared in the section illustrating the use of ものだ to show surprise (about something the speaker sees). 人に迷惑をかけておいて、よく平気な顔をしていられるものだ。 I think it means: How can someone put on such an indifferent face after inconveniencing others? Or am I horribly wrong? Can someone please tell me what...

Re: Question on それにしても/それにしては

小学生の背が低いと思います。鈴木さんの娘さんの背は158cmですが、高いと思います。。。

4)それにしては

5)高

ミシュランガイドに載っているレストランは値段が高いと思いますが、850ユーロは高過ぎると思います。

6)それにしても

Japanese Table Manners

Mom: "How many times do I have to tell you not to play with your food?" Ok, that pretty much sums up my childhood table manners... haha :) But seriously, at a Japanese table, what do I need to know (if I'd like to be invited again... )? When someone offers food, do I accept with my rice bowl, or cho...

Re: Question on それにしても/それにしては

Ok, I'm guessing that none of the students got it right... So, 難易度の高い問題だが、それにしても正解者はいない。 (Since it is a difficult question, we would expect only a few correct answers, but the result was even "worse" than expected: None of the students got it right.) How many students in the class do you (Hiraikotsu...

hmmm, the "ko-rule" is a good one. Are there any other hints in a Japanese name that would give a clue to the bearer's gender? :)

Re: Question on それにしても/それにしては

This turns out to be more difficult than I expected. (難しい問題にしても、まだわかりません???) If I use Yudan's explanation on Coco's sentence: 「暖冬にしては、雪が多い」 In spite of it being a warm winter, there is a lot of snow. (The result is unexpected, given that it's a warm winter) Or, 「厳しい冬にしても、雪が多い」 Granted it is a harsh ...

Question on それにしても/それにしては

This sentence appeared in my textbook in the section explaining それにしても/それにしては. From what I gathered (correct me if I'm wrong..) それにしても is used when something above the speaker's expectation happens. Conversely, それにしては would refer to something that was below expectation. So the sentence goes like thi...
