Re: Commands or Directions

Thank, Keatonatron! I really think I'm going to have to read all the way through Tae Kim's guide soon. I just don't recall seeing any helpful methods of practice within it. So, I was slightly wrong. I've learned about and used ~ください plenty of times, but how often is ~なさい or just ~な used? The な examp...

Re: Singular or Plural?

I don't think it's technically correct, though. "The Blasting Candies is here" sounds perfectly fine to me, knowing that The Blasting Candies is a band.

It does seem like it would be the kind of thing you'd encounter early on, but I don't recall having ever encountered it.

Re: To (probably) discuss a lot of basics

Well, yeah. It's obviously used for contrasting things. I wasn't trying to refute that. :)

Re: Commands or Directions

Oops, well...I meant to specify that I'd like to know how to say it in multiple forms. I'm not really looking for a "Go to bed" that a parent might say a child. Hmmm... I'm looking more for a situation like this: Person 1: Where can I buy something to drink? Person 2: Go to the convenience store aro...

Commands or Directions

I've been meaning to ask this for a long time and always seem to forget when I'm actually sitting in front of my computer. How would you go about telling someone to do something, such as "go to bed" or "brush your teeth"? Perhaps if someone asked for directions, you might want to say "go down this s...

Re: To (probably) discuss a lot of basics

I admit Astral's response was rather...lacking. However, Hyperworm's extremely clear explanation (assuming it's correct. I suppose we still need verification.) seems to support the notion that it could be a considered a topic particle in the case of contrasting. If I saw 「私はりんごは好きです」 by itself, I'd ...

Re: Some Genki Exercises

It's ok. The fact that you put the word in quotes helped me realize you were using it in a special way. The explanation that came afterwards clarified it pretty well. I'm not sure which word would be best, either, to be honest. However, should I think of a good one, I'll be sure to come back to this...

Wow, I never expected so many examples. Thanks, Nilecat! I'm going to read through them all later and try to get a bit of a feel for the various differences :D

Re: Is this acceptable criticism?

Infidel. Your argument there is extremely solid. I do indeed remember some math book I was teaching myself out of a couple years back where I encountered the same situations. In fact, I eventually got so fed up with repeatedly doing the same problem over and over again in a different form (the first...

Re: Transitive, Intransitive and which particle should be used.

Well, I wasn't particularly confused about anything. I was just more curious about how I should figure out which particle to use if I look up a new verb. Keatonatron's explanation is pretty much what I understood it to be, and the examples helped a great deal in putting into perspective. PS - I also...

Transitive, Intransitive and which particle should be used.

Hello. A short conversation regarding transitive and intransitive verbs took place in the 日本語の練習 subforum and I would very much like to see it continued over here. I am personally very unsure of myself when it comes to such things and don't really understand why some verbs take を, some take が, or po...
