Re: ギリギリのつもりの俺の上で

Close! But not quite. :) ギリギリ alone describes the emotional or physical “state” of the speaker. And, つもり refers to his “thought”; how he sees himself (even if it is untrue). Here’s an example for you. 彼女は美人のつもりでいる。 (She sees herself as being beautiful.) So, the interpretation of the line would be; ギ...

Re: ギリギリのつもりの俺の上で

えーと、違うんじゃないかな。 :) これは詩か歌詞だろうけど、「ぎりぎりまで頑張っている」あるいは何らかの理由で「ぎりぎりの状態(限界の状態)にある」(と自分は感じている) For instance, if you are studying very hard for your coming entrance exam, when you look up and find your cat yawning, it would make you feel something, right? That’s the nuance of these lines, I guess. EDIT: 「俺の上...

Re: Need Help when to use the "te form"

Adding ‘te’ makes it sound more colloquial.
Meaning-wise, they are interchangeable.
The ‘root form’ is often used in something like news articles, academic essays, novels or such.

Re: Some questions about the verbにneg.pot form verb construc

I’m pretty sure your actual skills are far beyond N1, however, the test seems to require you to possess trivial knowledge that native speakers take for granted. Go for it! I’m glad if I can be of any help. :)

Re: Some questions about the verbにneg.pot form verb construc

You are correct, LOTF. It can apply to almost any (simple) verb. The grammatical analysis on this is beyond me but when used in conversation, you can convey some dramatic feeling with (sometimes) a subtle sense of humor, for the use itself sounds a kind of…what you call it? …fustian? そのネズミの目を見たらなんだか...

Re: Translating the word selfless into Japanese.

No, it doesn’t, I'm afraid. 無我 is usually used in set phrases like 無我の境地. And it is a noun, never used as da-adjective. Also, when the word is used independently, it kind of implies some association with Buddhism as a translation of ‘anatta’ or ‘anatman’, IMHO. In that sense, 無私 seems more valid for...

Re: Translating a little song

Katafeiさん、お久しぶりです。
歌詞の意味、ほとんど合ってますよ!

「平手」は、人名です。
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%B9%B3% ... 0%E9%85%92
(かつては)「平手さんは(立派な)男だ」と(人々に)もてはやされた私だが・・・
という意味です。

「もとをただせば 侍育ち」は、
(私は)もともとは、侍として育った・・・(が、今はその面影もない)

「何が不足で 大利根ぐらし」は、
ちゃんとした侍として育ち、腕も良かったのに、何故/何が理由で/何が不足して、今はこんな暮らしをしているのだろうか・・・

またね! :)

Re: 移し変える and 移し替える

Hello Jim, Let me try to explain the difference of those two in nuance. But please understand that the interpretation might somewhat differ amongst age groups. Take my interpretation as one of “aged” people. We use both of those kanji’s in our daily life like they are interchangeable, however, if yo...

I think most of your sentences would work. 1. 私の昨日に買った帽子を彼が捨てた It makes sense however, 私が昨日買った帽子を彼が捨てた。 私が昨日買った帽子を彼は捨てた。 彼が、私が昨日買った(ばかりの)帽子を捨てた。 彼は、私が昨日買った(ばかりの)帽子を捨てた。 「昨日に」sounds a bit off. 2. 朝ごはんを作る前にいつも手を洗います。 Sounds perfect to me. (option) 朝ごはんを作る前に(は)いつも手を洗います。 3. 髪の毛をとかさなければ、誰もあなたに話しません。 Not...

Re: Grammar Question for Native Speakers on relative clauses

The common translation seems to be 俺は俺だから俺なんだ.
Meaning-wise, only 俺は俺なんだ would work, though, they have added another 俺 aiming to emphasize his confidence, I guess. :)

Re: trouble with song lyrics.

:) You might want to compare to some expression like this: 唇に微笑みのルージュを Wear rouge of smile on your lips. It’s a metaphor, of course, and it says to wear “rouge” by the name of “smile”, right? By using the expression “the rouge of tears, which is a paraphrase of “rouge of sorrow”, can convey some nua...

Re: trouble with song lyrics.

Kind of. The license here would cover some image like rouge can be assumed as a sort of lip glosser that coats your lips, which might taste bitter, like you can feel the bitterness in your mouth when you cry. Or, this expression is sometimes used just to refer to your sad feelings. In that case, the...
