Well, I think that Daniel and Danielle may use the same characters, though there should be a tone when you say it.

I believe you would use the characters ダニエル.

I'd only use romaji to get a hold of "pronunciation" and associating the other characters with it.

After romaji, I suggest hiragana (I think they learn it first; katakana in children's books have hiragana furigana on top), then katakana, then kanji.
