Re: confused about kanji pronunciations, please help

kanji readings are a matter of customary usage, and therefore you'll always have exceptions to any rules. usually, kunyomi (kun or native reading) is used for verbs and single character nouns, particularly for things Japanese have long had words for: basic phenomena such as wind, rain, etc. But not ...

Re: Need Help for translating a tattoo from a pretty girl's

Apparently, you see the challenge of the sincerity of my post or of my connection with reality as not insulting, or flamebaiting. That is your opinion. My opinion differs. For rebuttal, I borrowed a previous characterization. That was my mistake. People who choose (I have already separated those who...

Re: Need Help for translating a tattoo from a pretty girl's

Okay, if someone scribbled on the Mona Lisa then. Da Vinci did that for commission. Or take your own favorite piece of artwork and imagine if somebody marked it up (though even a slave might not want to see the product of their labors ruined). This may sound old school, but scars and blemishes used ...

Re: Need Help for translating a tattoo from a pretty girl's

One should expect confidence with their doctor, confessor if their moral system requires one, or lawyer, but not with the guy who sells them beer and cigarettes without regard to their best interests. I put the tattoo "artist" in the latter category. More, the very purpose of a tattoo is for display...

Are you for real? How is it not private what may be found on your buttocks? Although I somewhat agree with the character judgements phreadom made, I don't see how their human refinement on those more subtle levels should affect their ability to teach a freaking math class. The fact of the...

Re: Need Help for translating a tattoo from a pretty girl's

I think tattoos do imply a sense of immaturity, irresponsibility, superficiality, lack of foresight, etc (and that's my personal opinion)... but I certainly don't think they are remotely synonymous with crime and outlaws anymore, like they were in decades past. I disagree. A tattoo is an inarticula...

Re: Does "Would you mind ~?" imply unpleasantness ???

If you say the incomplete phrase by itself: "Would you mind...", the implied second part to complete the sentence is "...not bothering me (getting out of my way, not invading my space, etc.).". Used in this context, it is always impolite. This leads me to a question I've had for quite a while: trans...

Re: Why is わかる constantly used for "to know", when it's not?

I think of 知りません as "I have no idea" 「私はあなたがロマンティックな知りませんでした。」 "I had no idea you're a romantic." Not rude, even flattering. How were you to know their secret feelings? 「東京タワーはどこにあるか知りません。」 "I have no idea where Tokyo Tower is." Pretty rude, unless they stumble over themselves apologizing. 「東京タワーはどこ...

Strange how you're supposed to be all Japanese 24/7/365, but everything on the site is in English. Kind of antithetical to the approach.
I don't buy his take on grammar. Grammar, especially Japanese grammar, is logical and interesting, and it prevents you from sounding like a babbling idiot.

A very old example: カエサルはガルを征服した。 As for Caesar, he CONQUERED GAUL. (what was done is important) As for me, there is KENDOU. (you're all about kendou) カエサルがガルを征服した。 IT WAS CAESAR who conquered Gaul. (who did it is important) It is for ME that kendou exists. (kendou is all about you) ha separates off...

Re: 含意が読み取れない

The definitions provided for 側面 are the problems here. I could find no dictionary (so far) that defines this as dimension; always side, lateral, sideline. It forces the interpretation that the sentence writes off the theory as a sidetrack in the history of philosophy, not crediting its extent of imp...
