Re: 「でも、靴は何の役にも立ちませんでした。」

Maybe I'm trying to read into it too literally. If 何の modifies 役, is that "what kind of use is..."? How does にも work in this?

「でも、靴は何の役にも立ちませんでした。」

I need help breaking down this sentence: 「でも、靴は何の役にも立ちませんでした。」 It's from The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen. She's had slippers when she left her house, but now, in the present for the story, she is without them. So she finds herself in a difficult situation. The translation for this s...

Re: Mr.Papers' Language Learning Method

I'll abstain from sharing that person's name with you. If the atmosphere around here does change, I'll make sure he knows it. It's only fair. By the way, even Khatzumoto of All-Japanese-All-the-Time fame had a few things to say about these boards; but he decided his happiness isn't worth wasting on ...

Re: Mr.Papers' Language Learning Method

I notice this forum doesn't get many new users. In fact, I heard someone on Youtube recently call this place "dead." I think he, too, noticed the clannishness of its more established members - more like it's only members. You get a few new people asking questions, and then they quickly get driven off.

Re: 3000 kanji in just 2 months!

Maybe I should elaborate. I myself said 「信じていません」, and he laughed at me as if my Japanese made no sense, and then translated it as "I no belief." Three thousand kanji in two months is absurd. One hundred kanji a day is absurd. I feel sorry for anyone who feels the need to lie like that.

3000 kanji in just 2 months!

Don't worry, I'm not trying to sell you anything. Someone online told me that he learned 3000+ kanji in just over two months, through the Heisig method. Then he translated 「信じていません」 as "I no belief."

Picture books (絵本)

I'm looking for Japanese children's books to increase my reading comprehension. They must be free and available through the internet. I used to go to Yahoo for these books, but back in March they discontinued the service. I think that picture books are best because you can readily relate a sentence ...

"toki" in Genki I

I know I read about using "toki" to describe the past in this book, but I forgot where and I've searched and can't find it. Can somebody help me out? The WagaWiki page with the "toki" entry isn't helpful, so if anybody could help me with using "toki" that would be great.

RE: Did the Naruto Fillers end?

They really shouldn't waste money on making filler episodes. Why do they do that? All they do is piss off their audience (yes, young boys can have good taste too) and make them tune off to the whole series, while putting money down the drain at the same time. Even though they think they're keeping t...

I have so much trouble with katakana

English is my first language but I still find it difficult to try to determine the translation of English-derived katakana. I sit there, slowly pronouncing every syllable, then trying to speed it up, change my pitch and tone and I still can't get it. I'm looking at Nintendo of Japan's website and I ...

Is "kouhai" ever used as a name suffix? Or would you just use "san" or nothing at all?
