Re: I went to ... (past tense)

I think it would ちかく に あそびに いきます; ALC gives a couple of examples of <place>に遊びに行く but none for <place>で遊びに行く. Other than that, the only quibble I have with Denus' advice is that the established katakana form of Coventry seems to be コベントリ. Oops, another quibble: you usually ゲームをする or ゲームをやる ("do" a...

Re: I went to ... (past tense)

If you're doing something with someone, you use the particle と → ともだち と
Then say "near Coventry" would be コヴェントリー の ちかく で
サバイバルゲーム を あそび に いきました To say "to go to do something", use the -masu stem of the verb followed by にいく.

Re: Perils of Translation: Part 2

Saya swung her katana at the burly beast. She slices its head open exposing its brains. But, no, the Chiropteran will block her sword with its muscular right arm. Saya bounded backwards to prepare for her next attack. I think a good way to handle line 2 here is with some sort of future-ish tense. "...

Re: Online learning/memorising tools?

Random question: when using Anki, do you only concentrate on recognizing kanji and the meaning of the word only? Or do you also test how to write the kanji?

Re: Hajimemashite!!!

Your IME either needs to be 昇アッパー'd into working, or you're typing the wrong things. はじめまして (not はぢめまして) わたしは instead of わたしわ (pronounced the same) I think there was another topic in which you were asking about your name. My best guess would be to write it as de-mian (デーミアン). And です instead of ぢす. I...

Re: question about -te + (giving and reciving)

If I remember rightly, te kureru emphasises the giver (anata ha watashi ni sentaku shitekureta i.e. you did this for me) while te morau emphasises the recipient (watashi ha anata ni sentaku shite moratta i.e. I got this from you). On that note, how do you use ageru and kureru with regards to people ...

Re: So frustrated; can't learn hiragana.

Well, as I said earlier in the thread, I guess I like to set the bar higher -- it took me a lot longer than a weekend to really feel comfortable reading and writing hiragana at a normal speed. I especially think for beginners, it's worth remembering that it's very dangerous to think that you have f...

Re: Using the word "and"

This may get into a longer discussion than we wanted for a quick question, so it is up to you if you want to continue along with this or point me in the proper direction. この男の子は背が低 くて やせています。 この男の子はやせて いて 背が低いです。 Why the difference in the two sentences? Thanks in advance! Because やせる is a verb and ...

So I decided to attempt some grammar online.
Your father's a wise man. :P You really do need to do the exercises. Language isn't something you can always just read about and use properly.

I dunno... Certain teachers can be pedantic. I mean, didn't you all have that one teacher in school that would constantly tell you to write in complete sentences? >.>

Japanese Webcomics

Most of the comics I read in English now are online webcomics, but (aside from scans of printed manga) I don't really read Japanese webcomics. Does anyone here read online manga to any degree, and if so do you have any recommendations?

what was your connection between 'life' and 'cure' ?
I was thinking of curing a life-threatening disease... sort of a tenuous connection, but eh.
