RE: Why do japanese movies suck?

your task: go to your local library, watch 10 movies with subtitles that were never popular enough to dub from 3 or 4 different countries. that's right, watch 10 movies from Soviet era Russia, watch 10 movies from Italy, 10 from France. and 10 from the Northern cold countries like Norway and Sweden....

RE: Can't log in on pandion :S

try again... should be fixed. :) TJPs IP changed again, and the fix i thought i made last time this happened didn't work like i thought it would... i should probably write a little script or something that checks that you can login and warns me if you can't... FWIW, the chat server stayed up, and if...

RE: TJP Video Site (beta)

well, i found the problem on the video site side of things... the mplayer/mencoder/ffmpeg conversion tools installed on the site do not support using the win32codecs. because... the video server is a x86_64 (64-bit) system and the programs were built for the 64-bit system, and the win32codecs can't ...

http://japanesepod101.com/. sure, they have a subscription for the study notes and maybe even the forums, but you can download the actual audio files without signing up.

RE: TJP Video Site (beta)

don't give up just yet! :) as far as i can tell, "Photo Story 3" is a free application from Microsoft. Microsoft also has a "Movie Maker" download that is free. both of these applications are for XP users, and my Windows stuff is all old 'Windows 2000' stuff... i am sure there is an easy way for you...

FWIW... the original video that didn't work: Selected video codec: [wmvadmo] vfm: dmo (Windows Media Video Adv DMO) Selected audio codec: [ffwmav2] afm: ffmpeg (DivX audio v2 (FFmpeg)) Clay-san version that did work: Selected video codec: [wmv9dmo] vfm: dmo (Windows Media Video 9 DMO) Selected audio...

RE: TJP Video Site (beta)

Coco-san, cool! that will probably work. you can even try .wmv, it is probably the 'no video' that causes problems... if you have difficulty, let us know. i have a web page where you can upload very large files with no problem. :)

RE: TJP being slow.

because TJP is often quite speedy (even with 100 or so guests), i imagine the slow times to be caused by some combination of: getting indexed by Google/Yahoo/etc. -- lot's of page loads per user in a relatively short amount of time. more than a handful of people browsing the kanji pages at the same ...

RE: TJP Video Site (beta)

that's the thing... i'm not sure if the video site will accept a file that does not have a video part. i would imagine that the 'video conversion' phase would give an error and fail because it couldn't find a video part to convert. but it's been a long time since i've played with the video site. i e...

RE: Who all, where all, what all

:) for me, that's "i'm a fixin' to fix you a drink." back to the original topic, "Who all was at the party?" is like adding 達 in Japanese... American English has lost the difference between singular 'You' and plural 'You', and some dialects have substituted "You all / Y'all" for the plural form. "Wh...

Coco-san, if it is larger than '2 megs' or so... email it to me (i think my email limit is 10M for attachments), or contact me tomorrow. we'll make it work somehow. i would guess that the video site does not handle uploads without video....

RE: Free DIY Kanji Worksheet Howto

if you check out This Thread and This Wiki Page you'll eventually find a 'penji' font with stroke order notation that you can download and install on your computer. then you can use 'Word' or whatever to make your own practice sheets. if you browse around the site where you download the font, you ca...

RE: Going to the movie theatre.

gah, here in LA where things are expensive in the first place... there are still a couple of theaters able to charge premium prices... like the Arclight that charges ~$11 for a ticket... but! they are reserved seats (just like on an airplane, you can pick where you want to sit), no *noisy kids*, and...
