Bigger Kanji Button

Postby zengargoyle » Mon 10.17.2005 7:20 pm

ok, so we all know that the small kanji are hard to read. and we all know that most browsers have a way to increase the font size. but there's a bit of a problem, when we increase the font size, all of the characters on the page get bigger and it gets ugly pretty quick.

so, check this out... Kanji Font Test

this is a snapshot from my local PHP-Fusion setup where i test things before changing the code that runs on this site. if you look closely you'll see a couple new links to the left of the Edit and Quote buttons. there's a [++] and a [--], each time you click on [++] the kanji in the post will get 50% bigger, the [--] will make the kanji 50% smaller. go ahead, give it a try. it uses Javascript so you'll have to have Javascript enabled for it to work.

i only know that it works with Firefox, if we can confirm that it works in IE and/or Safari and/or any other popular browsers... i'll clean it up a little bit and add it to the site.

None of that worked for me, but i did like the fact that there were multiple newest threads and the hottest threads were different. It would be nice if the site was updated and redesigned a little maybe.;) Oh yeah, I have AOL and it didnt work.

Goals:
1) Have decent proficiency in Japanese, enough to get around/talk/read/write.
2) Visit Japan for a week or so one summer.

I don't mind increasing the font to read the small kanji. It would be nice if all the text was larger in general, but holding ctrl and scrolling my wheel to read a few words and then going back isn't very difficult.

try again if you can, i think it will work now. tested IE6/Opera/Firefox and all looks good.

AOL? do you know which browser it's based on? anyway, try again, maybe the changes for IE will help you as well. the hottest threads i can't do anything about... but i can make the newest threads show a few more. and i'll also point you to The SuperViewThread Page which has one annoying bug i need to fix, but i've been using it exclusively for months now.

the only reason increasing the font like that bothers me is that by the time i've increased it enough to be able to read the kanji the rest of the page has exploded and turned really ugly and hard to navigate. maybe it's just the way firefox works on my box, but it's yucky looking.

It is working for me with my IE, and it is a really good idea. ;) .. It would be useful, because yes, some kanji can be hard to read when they are so small..

Update:

i think all the browser compatibilty bugs are ironed out. i've made patched to my test install to add the ++/-- to the Newest Threads, Shoutbox and Kanji Benkyou panels and everything looks good.

a couple little things left: i wanted to add the ++/-- controls directly to the right of the panel title, like 'Kanji Benkyou [+][-]', but since that part of the display is created by the themes it would mean modifying every single theme. so the controls may have to go just below the panel title.

the other thing is what the controls look like. i've been using [++][--] but that looks a bit odd, maybe just +|- or [+|-] or even small magnifying-glass images. if anybody has preferences speak now or forever hold your peace.

otherwise, just wait a bit longer and there will eventually be buttons of some sort to increase the kanji font size.

well, i have the changes all ready and such, but my DSL has gone kaboom. if i'm not back up over the weekend, i'll bring the files to work and make the changes from here. anyway, we'll have bigger kanji in a couple of days.

It looks fine with firefox. The "bigger kanji" button is a great idea, it's wonderful not having to sit quite as close to the screen as before =)

meiloyn, the links only work on posts with kanji/kana in them. try them on this post and the characters below should change size, the ▲ is bigger, the ▼ is smaller.

我輩は猫である。 いいですか?

if it still doesn't work, tell me what browser you're using. it should be working in IE, Firefox and Opera.

oh, and make sure you have Javascript turned on. it wont' work without Javascript.

my DSL is still broken...:@

I second "the link is dead". It seems the server is down rather than the file not being there.

I tried with with IE6 and Firefox 1.0.7
