There is still a chat program. Zengargoyle has already said a number of times that the flash chat won't be coming back, because it can't be used on this server.

If you are on windows, i found Pandion very easy to use. Go to the website below, and download it, then install it.

Once that is done, it will open and ask you straight away for your username and password. Your username is the same one as you use to login to the forums (except put a . where any spaces are), followed by @chat.thejapanesepage.com. Password is the same as for the forum. Then click login.

Now you go to the 'Actions' menu, and select 'Join a Conference room'. It will automatically show you any rooms, and how many people are on it. Then just click the one you wish to join, and thats it.

http://www.pandion.be/download/

Give it a try, its as easy or easier than using MSN or ICQ. If anyone really needs screenshots, I will take some. But just remember - your sign in address is {TJP.UserName@chat.japanese.com}, and the password is the same as you use to post here.

there's a slight problem with that. you have to be running a web server on the same machine as the chat server to serve up the applet (applet security restriction), and a web server isn't part of the hosting deal. and secondly, having an applet is pretty much exactly the same as downloading the JBother client. both require you to have Java on your machine (no big deal, only grumpy people like me don't enable Java in their browser :D) ), so if an applet would work for you, so would JBother.

all that being said.... i am looking at installing an applet. the chat server is written in this neato embeded language known as Erlang, and Erlang has web server functionality as a loadable module (in fact, the admin page of the chat server is web based). it just won't end up being on a standard port, so http://chat.thejapanesepage.com:XXXX/ or something. but then again, you can just download the applet and run it from your desktop like JBother so i don't see what the big fuss is....

if anybody wants to try some web based chatting:

http://jwchat.org
http://meebo.com

both of these sites have a web based interface that you can use to login and chat on the TJP chat server.

I found if you follow the instructions to the letter then it is really nice and easy.

Of course it took 15 minutes for me to notice I hadn't

I felt like a complete idiot. :)

chatroom is not IRC. chatroom is Jabber. you'll need a Jabber client. from a quick look at mIRC's web page, it seems to be only an IRC client.
