mistranslation in random Kanji?

Postby Variand » Thu 05.26.2005 12:58 pm

In the random Kanji for "fish" the sample sentence mentions the word "aoi" and in the translation calls it a "green fish"

shouldn't it be blue?

The translation for 青い / 'aoi' on this site is: blue (sometimes green). Other sources translate it as: blue, pale, green, unripe, inexperienced.

It's interesting to note that both Japanese and English share the inexperienced/young connection with the color green, presumably derived from the unripe definition.

Sorry for the confusion.

I remember driving a Japanese friend around before I really got into the language. We were chatting along while waiting at a signal light. I was having a good time until she said (in English), "It's blue." I said, "what's blue?' She said, "the light" and I said, "Oh, it's green!" She was translating exactly as they say in Japanese - a light is aoi (blue). I have flubbed up a few times myself in saying it is 'midori'

On a related note, the sun isn't yellow, it is red for most Japanese.
