View topic - mistranslation in random Kanji?
It's interesting to note that both Japanese and English share the inexperienced/young connection with the color green, presumably derived from the unripe definition.

I remember driving a Japanese friend around before I really got into the language. We were chatting along while waiting at a signal light. I was having a good time until she said (in English), "It's blue." I said, "what's blue?' She said, "the light" and I said, "Oh, it's green!" She was translating exactly as they say in Japanese - a light is aoi (blue). I have flubbed up a few times myself in saying it is 'midori'
On a related note, the sun isn't yellow, it is red for most Japanese.
