Conjunctions and the like?

Postby Spaztick » Thu 02.03.2005 10:44 pm

What are some of the conjunctions?

I know soshite, kedo, demo (really put at the beginning of a sentence), etc.

So, what is the Japanese for "so" as in "So, what happened...."?

I am quite sure there is no Japanese equivalent for this usage of "so" in the English language.

Therefore, in order to say "So, what happened?" in Japanese, you would most probably not be so abrupt and ask more indirectly and politely, as always in the Japanese language. Maybe...

「そうです。それから、何が起こりますか。」
"I see. And then, what happened?"

Here are some common conjunctions that I can recall without reference.

と - and, inclusive particle
そして - and
それから - and then
でも - but
なぜ - why, more forceful than "doushite"
どうして - why
から - because, explicitly states previous sentence is a reason
ので - because, put between 2 sentences, with an explanatory tone on the first one
のに - despite
が - but, expresses contradiction between 2 sentences
けど - same as "ga", slightly more stronger in tone
けれど - more formal version of "kedo"
けれども - very formal version of "keredo"

Well, you can use "〜んで?" as well for "so."

This is the kind of "so...?" that you use when someone is telling a story and trails off or leads to a seemingly irrelevent point.

恵子:昨日、ね、由美ちゃんの所に行って、ね。。。
。。。
。。。
博:〜んで!?!
