Kotoeri on Mac OSX

Postby Paul De Stefano » Tue 04.18.2006 2:17 am

Does anyone know of a good explanation of how to use this feature?

今晩白い月をみました。

Just entered tediously with the kana palette window.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't think kotoeri was a feature. It's just something that sits there in the background (as in, on your disk; not in some active window) that enables you to work in Japanese.

Pfft! I type so much Japanese on my iBook, I forgot how to write it by hand!

Anyway, you can type in Japanese using your keyboard, and it'll convert your "romaji" keystrokes into Japanese script. It couldn't be more simple. I even have all the keyboard shortcuts down by now. Here's how to set it up: System Preferences --> International --> Input Menu --> Kotoeri. Be sure to at least have 'Hiragana,' 'Katakana,' and 'Romaji' selected. Now a new icon should appear in the upper right hand corner of your menu bar allowing you to switch between your selected input methods. Choose 'Hiragana,' and you can begin typing in Japanese. It might take a little time to get used to, but it's pretty intuitive. I'm also finding the character pallete handy lately when looking up kanji.

今晩白い月をみました。
I typed in romaji with the hiragana icon showing just as suggested; hit space bar and got the result above. すごいですね! It couldn't be easier, Thanks for the help.
