The nins

Post by Iwark » Sun 09.17.2006 10:27 pm

Now guys, it's time to count the nins.

If there is a mistake, please correct me.

You didn't write the pronounciation for those two.

EDIT: Oh, you did now. :)

一人 is ひとり, except when it is いちにん
二人 is ふたり, except when it is ににん

Hope that helps.

One thing I never quite figured out is when you use 人 vs. 目 to count people. Probably simple...

Easy, you never use 目 to count people. You do sometimes use 名, though.

The 名 style is a bit more stiff/formal. You'll encounter it at restaurants

To fudge just a bit:

Sometimes you do use 目 when counting people.....but you can also use it for counting anything else. 目 is an "ordinal suffix" (difference between 1, 2, 3 and 1st, 2nd, 3rd).

So 三人 is "three people" while 三人目 is "the third person".

See?

Let me know if there is a mistake. I'm going to use another there is a mistake. I'm going to use another computer, so I may not type in nihongo..
