Practice dialogue...

Postby Txkun » Mon 12.18.2006 4:14 pm

Hi!
I wanted to try my poor japanese skills at sort of little dialogue.
It's two friends arranging a meeting by phone.
There are some grammar points I'm not sure I got right.
Someone would be so kind to check and help me correcting?
Many thanks in advice.

Sakura: Hi Marie, how are you?
サクラ:こんにちは、マリエちゃん、元気?

Marie: Eee, Marie! it was a while! I'm fine, you?
マリエ:ああ、サクラちゃん!久しぶりねぇ。元気、あなたは?

Sakura: Fine, thanks for asking! So today are you free?
サクラ:元気、お陰様で。今日、暇?

Marie: Mhh... yesterday my boss gave me a lot of work to do so I'll be back home late.
マリエ:ええと、昨日所長は私にもっと働かせるだから遅く帰る。

Sakura: I see. I wanted to eat okonomiyaki in a new restaurant that opened last week.
サクラ:なるほど。残念なぁ。先週に空いた新しいレストランでお好み焼きを食べたい。

Marie: Okonomiyaki! Wow, I love them.
お好み焼き! 素晴らしい! あれが大好き。

Sakura: I know... so what about tomorrow?
サクラ:知っているなぁ。さあ、明日どう?

Marie: Eee, yes I think I'll be free after 19:00. It okay?
マリエ:ええと、 ええ! 午後7時から暇だろう。大丈夫?

Sakura: Sure
サクラ:はい!

Marie: Okay, I'll then call Jack and Mike too.
マリエ:ジャッキとミケを呼びます。

Sakura: Okay, I'll reserve for 4 people then.
サクラ:4人ために蘭?オます。

Marie: Yes. Where is the restaurant?
マリエ:ええ。レストランはどこ?

Sakura: Do you have any piece of paper to write down address?
サクラ:アドレスを書くで紙が持っています?

Marie: Errr... I can't find it just now.
マリエ:ええと、今見つけることができない。

Sakura: It's in Shibuya, near Shibuya 109.
サクラ:渋谷に、Shibuya 109の側にあります。

Marie: Ah, it's not too far. Well, then let's meet there, okay?
マリエ:あ、遠くない。ここで会いましょうねぇ?

Sakura: Okay, at 19:30?
サクラ:はい!午後7時半にいい?

Marie: Okay!
マリエ:うん!

Sakura: See you tomorrow then!
サクラ:じゃあ、また明日!

Marie: Sure, bye bye!
マリエ:はい、バイバイ。

By the way... I got hungry thinking about okonomiyaki! :p

Great! Many of them are not really corrections. They are just one of many ways that you might hear Japanese young women talk. I I hope this helps. :)

Sure! Thank you very much, you used terms I didn't know and I'll surely need to know them. I feel your version much more 'fresh' and alive.

Can I ask a grammar point I didn't get?

What's the exact meaning of だけど at end of sentence? It's okay "As"?
She's then saying: [I called you] as I wanted to eat together okonomiyaki.
I ask because I wondered why it's used the past of 食べる.

Thanks again!

The けど is a trailing "but..." to soften the preceding statement; the だ goes with the preceding ん(の) to give an explanatory tone. And you yourself used the past in the original English (I wanted to eat...), so it isn't surprising that the past of 食べたい (not 食べる) is used.

Thank you richvh-san for the help.

The further explanation of 食べたかったんだけど:
食べたかった certainly is a past tense in general.
It also conveys the meaning of "I wish I could" in this case.
だけど conveys the meaning of "I wish I could but it seems I can't".

I am not good at explaining grammer... does this make sense?
